Costco just dropped a new protein bowl—here’s what a dietitian really thinks of it

Costco Debuts New Chicken and Grain Protein Bowl
Costco's new Chicken & Grain Protein Bowl is packed with rotisserie chicken, grains, and veggies. Here's what shoppers—and a dietitian—are saying.

Weekly meal prep just got easier.

In addition to its bulk sizes and budget-friendly prices, Costco remains well known for delivering quick and easy meals that require little to no prep. From the brand’s iconic $5 rotisserie chicken to its the Kirkland Signature prepared foods in the deli case, the beloved warehouse chain has no shortage of convenient meals for shoppers to enjoy throughout the week.

While there’s no end to the delicious options one might choose for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, multiple shoppers have reported seeing a new dish arrive at Costco that just might be the brand’s most exciting ready-to-eat meal yet.

Costco debuts a new Chicken and Grain Protein Bowl

According to multiple food bloggers like costcojacque, Costco has officially rolled out a new prepared meal in the form of the Chicken and Grain Protein Bowl. In the container, you’ll find neat rows of pickled red cabbage, roasted sweet potatoes, a quinoa-barley blend, Costco’s signature rotisserie chicken, sliced hard-boiled eggs, roasted edamame, spinach, and cashews—all sitting on a bed of chopped romaine lettuce, with a packet of Asian sesame dressing to pour over the top.

What a dietitian says about the meal

The ingredient lineup also earned praise from Good Housekeeping nutrition and fitness lab director Stefani Sassos, M.S., R.D.N., NASM-CPT, who said the bowl offers a well-rounded mix of protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

“I love the look of this because it seems like such a well-balanced meal,” says Sassos. “What really stands out to me is the focus on protein—you’ve got rotisserie chicken, eggs, edamame, and nuts, so you’re getting a variety of animal and plant protein sources,” she remarks. “At the same time, it’s balanced with fiber, healthy fats, and plenty of nutrient-dense ingredients. The container looks generous enough that you could make more than one meal of it, and it’s already priced pretty competitively, so that’s a major win in my book.”

At $8.99 per pound, Costco’s new protein bowl is both comparatively budget-friendly and a hassle-free weeknight dinner. According to the package nutrition label, it contains about 20 grams of protein per serving, making it an appealing option for shoppers looking for a protein-packed meal.

Online shoppers couldn’t be happier with the new bowl

Gauging the reaction online, most members are enthusiastic about Costco’s Chicken and Grain Protein Bowl. One Costco-centric food blogger, costcohotfinds, highlighted the sheer size of the container, noting that it could provide several meals.

“This one shocked me at how much I loved it!” the blogger shared on her Instagram.

Though many shoppers praised it as a great meal-prep option, others joked that they had trouble making it last. “Just bought four of them so I can plan out meals for a month, but I got confused and all of them in one sitting,” one user quipped.

Bottom line

Like most of Costco’s prepared meals, the Chicken and Grain Protein Bowl balances flavor with its generous size and an affordable price point. Depending on portion size, it could be shared among several people or divided into multiple meals for one person, making it a versatile option for lunch or dinner.

Of course, as is so often the case with Costco, there’s no way to know how long the Chicken and Grain Protein Bowl will remain stocked in warehouses. Judging from shoppers’ reactions online, however, anyone interested may want to pick one up sooner rather than later before it disappears from the refrigerated prepared foods section.
