The Arizona Diamondbacks received encouraging news ahead of Tuesday's game against the Athletics as Corbin Carroll is expected to return to the lineup after missing just one game. According to John Gambadoro, Carroll avoided a serious injury after hyperextending his right elbow during Sunday's win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Carroll exited late in that game after appearing to injure the elbow on a swing. Manager Torey Lovullo later said the All-Star outfielder did not need further imaging and was considered day-to-day, with Monday's absence serving as a precaution.
The 25-year-old has remained one of Arizona's most productive players despite a few minor injury scares this season. Through 96 games, Carroll is slashing .250/.344/.480 with 14 home runs, 47 RBIs and an .824 OPS while leading Major League Baseball with 10 triples.
Carroll's expected return comes at an important time for Arizona after Monday's 5-2 loss to the Athletics. The Diamondbacks had entered the series fresh off a seven-run comeback victory over the Cardinals but were without their leadoff hitter in the opener.
Arizona enters Tuesday with a 51-49 record, sitting second in the National League West and remaining firmly in the National League Wild Card race. Getting Carroll back atop the lineup would provide an immediate boost as the club continues its push toward the postseason.
The Diamondbacks have relied heavily on Carroll's speed and all-around production throughout the season. Avoiding a lengthy absence is a welcome development for a team looking to gain ground before the trade deadline.
