The following is a news release from the city of Idaho Falls.

IDAHO FALLS – Beginning on Wednesday, July 22, expect detours around the intersection of Holmes and 49th South as contractors work to install traffic lights.

The project will increase safety for vehicles and pedestrians.

The intersection is currently an all-way stop. Over the last decade, additional development in the area has increased the amount of traffic at the intersection. Along with more traffic, between 2018 and 2023 there were 17 crashes reported within 300 feet of the intersection, one resulting in multiple fatalities.

Bonneville County and the City of Idaho Falls have applied jointly for federal funds and are both investing in an improvement to the intersection.

The design for new intersection will include designated left turn lanes, signaled ADA compliant pedestrian ramps and sidewalks.

During construction, the intersection will be closed and travelers should expect detours. Work is scheduled to run through the end of September, depending on weather and field conditions.

Drivers should watch for crews and equipment, obey all posted traffic control signs, and reduce speeds in the work zone to ensure the safety of both workers and the traveling public.

After the project is completed, the intersection will be managed by the City of Idaho Falls.

While Bonneville County is leading this project, the city is assisting in sharing this information to help notify the public of upcoming traffic impacts. For more information about the project, contact Suncore Construction and Materials Inc. at (208) 458-4000.
