The Chicago Blackhawks have secured the face of their franchise for years to come, signing Connor Bedard to a five-year, $75 million contract extension with an average annual value of $15 million. The agreement removes any uncertainty surrounding one of the NHL's brightest young stars while reinforcing Chicago's commitment to building its future around the 21-year-old center.
Bedard has quickly established himself as the centerpiece of the Blackhawks' rebuilding project since being selected first overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. Through his first three NHL seasons, he has led Chicago in scoring each year, totaling 203 points, including 75 goals and 128 assists, in 219 regular-season games. His rapid development has already placed him among the league's elite offensive talents.
The extension follows another outstanding campaign in which Bedard recorded 75 points on 30 goals and 45 assists in 69 games. His production came despite missing time because of injury, continuing a trend of overcoming adversity while remaining one of the NHL's most dynamic young players. He also captured the Calder Trophy in 2024 after an impressive rookie season.
Following the signing, Bedard admitted there was never much concern that a deal wouldn't get done. He said both sides shared the same vision throughout negotiations and quickly agreed that a five-year contract represented the best path forward for both the player and the organization.
The young superstar also shut down speculation that he could have pursued an offer sheet in restricted free agency. While other elite young players around the league have attracted massive outside offers, Bedard emphasized that Chicago has always been the only place where he wanted to continue his career, citing the team's young core and strong locker-room culture.
The only setback entering the 2026-27 season is Bedard's health. The Blackhawks recently announced that he will miss the start of the season after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder. However, the center said his recovery is progressing well and that he remains focused on returning as quickly and safely as possible.
For Chicago, this extension represents far more than a financial commitment. It confirms that the Blackhawks' rebuilding plan will continue to revolve around Bedard, whose talent, leadership, and work ethic have already transformed the franchise's outlook.
