Conan O’Brien’s new slicked-back hairdo caused a ruckus after he debuted the look in a recent podcast taping. Now, he’s disclosing the reason why he’s ditched his signature pompadour.
The Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend host sported a greased-up ‘do in a video of his interview with Molly Shannon on Monday. Fans went wild when they saw his new look, hoping O’Brien would offer up an explanation during his chat with the actress.
“Sitting here watching thinking, are we just ignoring his hair?” a commenter said. Another added, “I’m expecting a dedicated segment about Conan’s hair at this point. Really, nobody says a word?”
Well, Team Coco fans, you’re in luck as O’Brien is finally addressing his hair in an exclusive clip shared with Entertainment Weekly. Turns out, it all stems from an appearance at the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s Jackson Park on June 18.
O’Brien says he attended the VIP event with his wife, Liza Powel, and, after they realized the opening would be held outside, he put some sunscreen on his face and went about his exciting day.
“It’s three hours-plus, and when it’s over, I’m so glad that I put the sunblock on, and I’m feeling really good about myself. Like, smart move,” O’Brien explains to cohost Sona Movsesian and assistant David Hopping in the exclusive video from his podcast.
He continues to note that he felt even more confident after he walked over to “bright, bright red” fellow guests Stephen Colbert and David Letterman, who looked like they had “been playing in a sandbox with plutonium.”
But, little to his knowledge, his sunburn saga was just beginning.
“A day or two later, after the event, I feel like my skull is on fire, and then two days after that, my [scalp] is really itchy, and whenever I itch it, it looks like a snow globe. It looks like confetti—white freckled confetti is pouring off of my head. It’s disgusting,” O’Brien admits.
He says he was so confused and thought he was “going crazy” until someone let him know he is suffering from a scalp sunburn and would have to treat it.
“I’m not used to [that] because I’ve got so much hair. But this sun just blasted right through my hair, and it roasted my scalp, and someone said to treat this, you’ve got to rub oil into it,” O’Brien continues in the clip. “So this morning, I rubbed oil into it, not thinking about the podcast when we went on camera, and then I come in and I look like I’m in Sha Na Na. I’m a grease ball. I’m so greasy. I’m Frankie [Valli].”
O’Brien, who seemingly recorded the Shannon interview a week or so after the Obama event, explains that he now has a comb to brush the oil through his “weighed-down” and luscious, dandruff-filled locks.
He now feels like a member of Grease’s T-Birds.
“I look like I want to fight one of you in the parking lot by swinging a chain at you in 1952, or come at you with a switchblade,” he jokes in the video. “I really feel different. I just want to fight people on the street. I want to get a hot rod and drive it around. I want to get Rizzo pregnant, so that Rizzo has a bun in the oven. You know what I mean?”
Movsesian brings O’Brien back down to earth and informs him that he “is not Kenickie,” but “one of the two extra ones.”
“I’m one of the Thunderbirds that is easily 55 years old,” O’Brien says, adding, “I’m going to put a bubble-gum cigarette behind my ear.”

“Anyway,” O’Brien concludes, “I’m a grease ball now, and I’m just gonna keep rubbing oil into my head until this my skull heals.”
He jokes that he’s using WD-40 before Movsesian confesses she “likes this look” on him. Hopping, however, is not a fan.
“I don’t like it, no,” Hopping says while shaking his head. “We got to fix the burn.”
O’Brien then insists he’s now Gordon Gekko, Michael Douglas’ character in Wall Street, before alerting folks to “wear a hat.”
“You know who was wearing a hat? Hillary Clinton was up there wearing a hat,” O’Brien shares “And it wasn’t just any hat. It was, I mean, it looked like a giant, giant sail on a sailboat. It was a huge hat. She’s smart. She’s laughing at me right now.”
