CNY court officer took intimate photos of woman without her knowledge, troopers say

Oneida, N.Y. ― A New York state court officer and former prison guard for the Marcy Correctional Facility took intimate photos of a woman without her knowledge, troopers said.

James W. Madera, 38, was charged July 10 with second-degree unlawful surveillance, a felony, State Police said in a news release Wednesday.

Madera was a recent hire for the New York State Courts, Trooper Jennifer Jiron said.

Madera did not take the intimate photos while he was on duty or in connection with his employment, troopers said.

Jiron said the incident took place in Waterville and was not in public. He has been ordered to stay away from the victim, troopers said.

From 2015 to 2024, Madera worked as a corrections officer in Marcy, according to state payroll records.

Madera was arraigned and released without needing to post bail.

If convicted, Madera could spend up to four years in prison.
