It may sound crazy to hear a player argue his team is in a "championship or bust" environment when it's been over 30 years since the franchise has reached a conference title game. However, that's the exact situation Dak Prescott knows his Cowboys deal with in Dallas.
And even though the Cowboys are on the heels of missing the playoffs in 2025, Prescott is willing to embrace the often unreasonable expectations placed on his team. But what took the conversation to another level is when a former Cowboys player turned ESPN analyst went on national television and argued why Dallas could actually make that long awaited Super Bowl run this year.
Chris Canty is extremely high on the potential of the Cowboys in 2026
During a segment of Tuesday's "First Take," Chris Canty, who spent his first four seasons with the Cowboys from 2005-08, detailed why Dallas may actually have what it takes to surprise people this coming fall and into the winter.
"For once in an offseason, we got the quarterback and the head coach setting the agenda for the team and not the owner Jerry Jones," Canty said.
Canty brought up actual football reasons that argue the Cowboys should contend.
"There's a lot to like about the Dallas Cowboys. And if the improvements that they've made on the defensive side...if that unit improves to the median in the NFL, we're talking about Dak Prescott having an MVP-level season loading and the Dallas Cowboys being able to play beyond the second week in the playoffs."
Canty says it's up to Dallas' defense to step up to help the offense
Canty then went even further.
"That offense is as good as any. Coming into 2026, I think they're actually going to be the best in the National Football League. And if the defense can close the gap and improve to being average, then we're talking about the Dallas Cowboys being a team that, not only contends for a division, but contends to be the representative for the NFC in the Super Bowl LXI," Canty concluded.
Stephen A. Smith is still not buying stock in the Cowboys
Stephen A. Smith dismissed what Canty had to say and argued the Cowboys need to "crawl before you walk" instead of talking about the Super Bowl.
It is true that the defense held the team back last season. So adding a stellar defense to Prescott's usual production could leave the door open for Dallas to make a deep playoff run and better his personal 2-5 record in the playoffs.
