CHP recovers a whopping $76 million in stolen goods

(KRON) — The California Highway Patrol has recovered a staggering $76.2 million in stolen goods since 2019. That’s according to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office.

Officials say that amounts to 1.6 million stolen items that have been recovered through CHP’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force. In addition to the stolen items, CHP says the task force has arrested more than 5,000 suspects.

Here are the numbers: Newsom’s office says since the task force’s inception in 2019, there have been more than 4,000 investigations, 5,330 arrests and 1,627,405 stolen goods recovered.

Digging deeper into this year alone: CHP reports 329 investigations, 315 arrests, 67,689 stolen items recovered and more than $6.3 million in recovered property.

CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said the task force is making major headway in getting stolen goods off the street.

“Working alongside our allied law enforcement agencies, retailers, prosecutors, and the public throughout the state, we’ve disrupted organized theft networks, recovered millions of dollars in stolen merchandise and held offenders accountable,” said Duryee. “While there is more work ahead, these partnerships continue to strengthen our ability to protect California’s businesses, employees, and consumers.”

The governor’s office said some notable stolen goods include thousands of stolen trading cards valued at $15,000 alone. CHP recently partnered with Nordstrom, Nike, Gap and other retailers to help recover the stolen goods.
