Chloe Fineman has revealed new details about her Saturday Night Live exit — including what happened during the conversation when she informed SNL boss Lorne Michaels that she wouldn’t return for the upcoming season.
“He was, in classic form, he was watching England vs. Argentina,” Fineman revealed to Variety (watch below) about discovering Michaels was at the World Cup when she phoned him to tell him about her decision to leave the show after seven seasons.
Fineman said Michaels, the legendary TV mastermind, “was doing, like, the coolest thing in the world with the coolest people, and we had a lovely talk” about her time on the program.
“He was like, ‘I’ll call you back, I’m at the game,’” Fineman added, laughing as she remembered his words.
“I was like, the soccer game? I made a joke, I was like, ‘I assume you’re rooting for England because you’re energetically very British?’” the star said.
Afterward, Fineman said that Michaels called her back, and again stressed that the pair “had a really lovely chat” about her decision to walk away from the weekly sketch comedy series.
The 38-year-old announced her SNL exit Thursday in an Instagram post in which she also praised the show.
“After 7 wonderful seasons at SNL I have decided it’s time for my next chapter,” she wrote in the post. “It’s cliche to say this but working at SNL has been the greatest privilege of my life. I still can’t really believe I got to be a part of it. I fell in love with the place the second I walked through the door.”
She also referenced Michaels in the post: “Lorne (if you’re reading this on your burner account) I want you to know that I am forever in your debt,” she said. “Every day I was lucky enough to be surrounded by the best people in the business, and I was constantly amazed watching them work.”
Fineman joined SNL as a featured player in 2019 for season 45, and was later promoted to a repertory performer in 2021 before the start of season 47.

On the show, she was renowned for her impressions of Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Coolidge, Timothée Chalamet, and more, and also built up a career of work outside the program as well, including roles in Freakier Friday, Babylon, and the upcoming pickleball comedy The Dink.
Entertainment Weekly reached out to representatives for NBC and Fineman for additional comment following her initial announcement that she wouldn’t return to SNL.
