The Los Angeles Chargers have one of the NFL's most promising backfields heading into 2026.
Although Omarion Hampton missed a large swathe of his rookie season with an ankle injury, he seems set and ready to go into training camp in full force. Combine that with the north-south skill-set of Kimani Vidal, who showed flashes of workhorse-like production during Hampton's absence last season, and the addition of Keaton Mitchell, and things are truly looking up for the run game in Los Angeles this season.
Under Mike McDaniel's outside zone-centered gameplan, the explosiveness and athleticism of both Hampton and Mitchell should be maximized, forcing defenses to account for the entirety of the field on the horizontal axis. If the run-blocking of the offensive line improves under McDaniel and new offensive line coach Butch Barry's unified vision, the Chargers could quickly establish one of the most lethal and consistent ground attacks in the league this season.
But this complexion of the backfield depends entirely on Mitchell's availability. Perhaps the Chargers, in order to ensure that, need to minimize his workload into a true RB3 role—similar to his time with the Baltimore Ravens.
Keaton Mitchell should be a real weapon for the Chargers this season, but maybe it's best to minimize his snaps early on
Mitchell could quickly go down as the steal of the offseason for Los Angeles. After three seasons of minimal production with Baltimore, the Ravens decided not to tender Mitchell as a restricted free agent this offseason. He ultimately signed with the Chargers on a two-year, $9.25 million deal.
Hampton will certainly be the lead back, and his versatility and athleticism could easily allow him to surpass the 1,000-yard threshold in his sophomore campaign. Vidal, meanwhile, will see his opportunities decrease, but he could still see heavy utilization as a red-zone back and in short-yardage situations.
Mitchell is the wild card here. Last season in Baltimore, he totaled just 59 attempts for 341 yards and a touchdown across 13 games. Intuition would tell you that, given his fit in McDaniel's scheme, he should see a major increase in touches in Los Angeles.
But his health is a major factor as well. Mitchell played just eight games during his rookie campaign, ultimately suffering an ACL tear that took away much of 2023 and 2024 from the young back. In 2025, he was limited to 10 games in part by a preseason hamstring injury and a knee injury he suffered late in the season.
The Chargers gameplan should be strong enough to withstand an injury to Mitchell, and Hampton and Vidal showed what they can accomplish in tandem late last season under Greg Roman's scheme. But for this backfield to be truly unlocked, they need Mitchell to be fully available— at least to have his explosive-play potential as a threat to opposing defenses.
Perhaps it will best, early in the season, to limit Mitchell's snaps to somewhere around the 25% mark he saw as a rookie in Baltimore, doling out the majority of the rushing attempts to Hampton and Vidal. If Mitchell shows he can handle an increased workload as the season goes on, he can likely eat into Vidal's snap share without any significant loss on the part of the offense.
But Los Angeles needs Mitchell available for their run game to meet its high standards in 2026, and that should be among the top priorities as the coaching staff sorts out their ground attack in the early portions of the season.
