5 former Chargers who could still be seeking out new homes in training camp

The Los Angeles Chargers undertook a major overhaul this offseason, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

As they move to Mike McDaniel's West Coast-style offensive scheme, the Chargers re-shaped the entirety of their interior offensive line and much of their offensive weaponry, adding Alec Ingold, Keaton Mitchell, Charlie Kolar, David Njoku, Cole Strange, and Tyler Biadasz through free agency and even an additional receiver in Brenen Thompson through the NFL Draft.

After the way last season went under Greg Roman, it was necessary to let major parts of the team's offensive infrastructure walk in free agency. Now, though, many of those pieces are left without new homes just over a week from training camp.

While those players will be able to seek out their best opportunities as rosters unfold, that's never a desirable position to be in. Here are the five former Chargers who, heading into training camp, have a real shot to carve out continued opportunities in the NFL.

1. Mekhi Becton, OG

After a career-prolonging move to the interior with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024, there were high expectations for Becton when he signed a two-year, $20 million deal with Los Angeles.

Things didn't seem right from the beginning, though, and Becton struggled with injuries and with acclimating to the Chargers' blocking scheme over the course of the season. By the time it was all said and done, Becton was one of the worst at his position— allowing 37 total pressures on just 444 pass-blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus.

Perhaps a team will be willing to bet on what he showed in 2024, though, and chalk up some of his shortcomings last season to the disastrous nature of the Chargers' protection as a whole.

Potential Fits: Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions

2. Najee Harris, RB

After gaining a reputation as one of the league's most durable and reliable backs during his rookie contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, things fell apart for Harris during his time in Los Angeles. He missed most of training camp with an eye injury he suffered during the offseason, and he then suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos.

He still flashed some upside, during his short stint with the Chargers, as a reliable secondary back behind Omarion Hampton. If a team feels confident taking on the re-injury risk, perhaps Harris will get another shot in the NFL this season. He could be a solid late-offseason pickup for a team whose backfield depth chart is still up in the air.

Potential Fits: Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans

3. Will Dissly, TE

Dissly's usage was somewhat confusing last season. Although he dealt with injuries, he was also a healthy scratch at multiple points even as the Chargers' tight end depth suffered beyond the emergent Oronde Gadsden II.

There's room to argue, though, that Dissly still has upside as a pass-catcher. He posted 50 receptions for 481 yards and two touchdowns in 2024. He's never been the most apt blocker, however. As teams place a greater emphasis on tight ends' functionality in 12 and 13-personnel sets, perhaps Dissly's chances in the league are running thin. If a team needs an additional pass-catcher, though, he could squeeze onto a roster in training camp.

Potential Fits: Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers

4. Tucker Fisk, TE

Fisk's offseason outlook is the opposite of Dissly's. Fisk has never been a real pass-catching threat at any point in his career, but his blocking abilities allowed him to carve out a consistent snap share with Los Angeles last season across the 10 games in which he appeared.

His departure was a result of the Chargers' pickup of Charlie Kolar this offseason.

As he enters his fourth NFL campaign, he won't be the most desirable late-offseason target. But a team in need of additional blocking personnel could extend a cheap contract to Fisk.

Potential Fits: New England Patriots, New York Giants

5. Keenan Allen, WR

Allen has been among the most discussed Chargers free agents this offseason, so that's why he's placed last on this list. But he's certainly the most intriguing of this group.

Perhaps there's still a minimal role he can carve out in McDaniel's scheme. But if it's time for him to move on, he will certainly have suitors— especially teams with young QBs in need of a reliable pass-catching presence.

It's also come to light that, contrary to popular belief, there's a chance Allen would be willing to move away from the West Coast at this point in his career. For teams in need of additional receiver depth, Allen could be an even better, and less volatile, choice than someone like Stefon Diggs.
