Chadwick Boseman’s brothers accuse his widow of sitting on the estate, now they want her stripped of control

Chadwick Boseman’s brothers are accusing his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman, of delaying distributions, withholding financial information, and maintaining exclusive control over valuable legacy assets.

The Boseman estate is at the center of a new family court battle nearly six years after the celebrated actor’s death, with his brothers seeking to remove his widow as the person responsible for managing his remaining assets.

According to TMZ, Kevin and Derrick Boseman filed legal documents in Los Angeles requesting that Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman be permanently removed as administrator. The brothers reportedly accuse Taylor of mismanaging the estate, failing to complete required distributions, and leaving their family without a clear explanation of where certain assets stand.

The allegations have not been proven in court. This report did not include a response from Taylor or her attorneys, and a judge had not publicly ruled on the brothers’ requests when the claims surfaced on July 22, 2026. 

The estate was previously expected to be divided between Taylor and Chadwick’s parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman. Per The Los Angeles Times, Taylor asked the court in 2022 to approve an equal division of approximately $2.3 million, with half going to her and the other half going to Chadwick’s parents.

That arrangement would have provided Taylor with approximately $1.15 million while Leroy and Carolyn shared the remaining $1.15 million. Court records placed the estate’s value at approximately $3.8 million before expenses, fees, and other deductions reduced the distributable balance.

Kevin and Derrick now allege that the division approved in 2022 was never fully completed. The brothers claim their parents remain entitled to assets and financial information that Taylor has not transferred or provided. Their filing reportedly asks the court to compel a complete accounting within 30 days and order the immediate distribution of any remaining property.

The latest estate dispute is about more than the cash balance discussed during the earlier probate proceedings. The siblings say the estate includes movie royalties, residual payments, intellectual property rights, image rights, insurance policies, investments, personal belongings, bank accounts, and other assets connected to Chadwick’s work and legacy.

The brothers reportedly claim more than $3 million remains in multiple bank accounts, though that allegation has not been independently confirmed through publicly accessible court records. They are also seeking information about residual payments earned through SAG-AFTRA after Chadwick’s death and unclaimed property that may still belong to the estate.

Kevin and Derrick further allege that Taylor has not transferred a long term care insurance policy to their mother. They believe the alleged delays have denied their parents access to money and coverage, caused emotional distress, and restricted the family’s ability to pursue projects connected to Chadwick’s name and creative legacy. Those statements remain allegations from the brothers’ filing rather than findings made by the court.

Control of the Boseman estate could also determine who negotiates future contracts involving Chadwick’s image, intellectual property, performances, and life story. Kevin and Derrick want Taylor prohibited from entering major estate agreements without family approval. They are also asking her to produce copies of existing contracts and reimburse the family for legal fees and court costs.

The brothers have requested that attorney Jason Rubin replace Taylor as administrator. They also want the court to hold her in contempt for allegedly failing to comply with the 2022 distribution order. A contempt finding, removal, accounting deadline, or restriction on Taylor’s authority would require court approval.

The probate history has unfolded in stages since Chadwick’s death. Taylor was appointed as the estate’s personal representative with limited authority in November 2020 after filing a probate petition. Initial reports placed the property passing through that proceeding at approximately $938,500.

That early figure was never necessarily a full measurement of Chadwick’s wealth. According to a separate TMZ report from 2020, the initial probate amount was not considered a complete reflection of his career earnings because additional assets could have been held through private arrangements outside the publicly listed property.

Public estimates of Chadwick’s net worth also differ from the values recorded during probate. Celebrity Net Worth estimates that he was worth approximately $4 million when he died in August 2020. That figure is a commercial estimate rather than a verified court accounting, and it should not be treated as an exact calculation of every asset, debt, contract, trust, or future payment connected to the Boseman estate.

The 2022 accounting listed a gross estate of $3,881,758.31 and included residual checks received after March 2021. That detail is significant because entertainment income can continue arriving after an actor’s death, making the estate’s value capable of changing as additional residuals, royalties, and other property are collected.

The Boseman estate entered probate because Chadwick died without a will. California’s intestate process governed the distribution while Taylor served as administrator. Chadwick died on August 28, 2020, at age 43 following complications from colon cancer, which he had privately battled for four years.

His financial legacy remains connected to a career that carried extraordinary cultural weight. Chadwick brought major Black historical figures to the screen through performances as Jackie Robinson, James Brown, and Thurgood Marshall before reaching global audiences as T’Challa in “Black Panther.”

The court must now decide whether the brothers have provided enough evidence to justify an accounting, sanctions, limits on Taylor’s authority, or her removal. Until that happens, the new claims remain one side of an increasingly complex dispute over who controls the money, rights, and cultural legacy Chadwick Boseman left behind.
