Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow dodges question about his mother, says she and their daughter are a unit amid $1.2M battle

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow Tenisha Warner’s careful response to one question from Gayle King is receiving new attention now that her private dispute with his mother has exploded into a $1.2 million court battle.

The widow of “The Cosby Show” actor sat down with the “CBS Mornings” cohost for her first interview since Malcolm died in an accidental drowning in Costa Rica on July 20, 2025. The conversation was recorded before Tenisha’s lawsuit against Pamela Warner became public, and CBS said its team did not know about the legal dispute at the time.

Tenisha primarily discussed losing her husband, raising their 9-year-old daughter and deciding how to use the limited emotional energy she has while grieving. However, the preview took a noticeable turn when King asked about Tenisha’s current relationship with Malcolm’s mother.

“Do you communicate with his mom? Are you close to his mom?” King asked.

“You know,” Tenisha began.

“Because where is she? She’s in Los Angeles?” King followed up.

“Mm-hmm,” Tenisha responded. “Yeah. Um, you know, right now, um, everybody, like all of his family members and who have lost him, they are grieving. You know, it’s been the biggest loss for all of us.”

Tenisha did not directly say whether she and Pamela regularly speak or remain close. Instead, she redirected the conversation toward the bond she has formed with her daughter since Malcolm’s death.

“Right now, my daughter and I are just like in terms like,” Tenisha said before trailing off.

“You guys are a unit,” King replied.

“Yeah,” Tenisha confirmed.

Tenisha then explained that her daughter receives whatever strength she can gather each day.

“Look, you know, it’s the emotional capacity that I have can be very limited sometimes, you know,” she said. “And so I have to for myself decide what do I have to give right now in this moment. And whatever I have to give, the first person to get that is my daughter, and then the second is myself.”

King later acknowledged that Tenisha’s indirect response stood out, especially after news of the lawsuit surfaced. King said the interview team had no knowledge of the legal fight and that she only asked because Pamela had publicly discussed losing her son.

“I thought her answer was telling,” King said, while emphasizing, “But I did not know that all of this was going on.”

Tenisha filed her Georgia lawsuit in DeKalb County Superior Court on Monday, July 20, exactly one year after Malcolm’s death. She named Pamela in her capacity as successor trustee of the Warner Family Trust, which Malcolm established in 1996 when he was 26-years-old.

The suit does not claim Pamela personally made financial promises to Tenisha. Instead, Tenisha argues that assets controlled through the family trust should be used to satisfy obligations Malcolm allegedly left unpaid.

According to the filing, Tenisha and Malcolm signed a premarital agreement in May 2022. She alleges that Malcolm agreed to purchase and maintain a $1 million life insurance policy naming her as the sole beneficiary but failed to obtain it.

Tenisha claims she is owed a total of $1,276,042.46. That figure reportedly includes the alleged $1 million insurance obligation, $195,000 in unpaid salary for her work as Malcolm’s “chief of staff,” $30,500 connected to a Roth IRA and $50,542.46 tied to an anniversary payment requirement.

She is also seeking interest, attorney fees and a court order preventing Pamela from distributing trust assets until the case is resolved. Tenisha alleges Malcolm’s estate “will be inadequate to satisfy” the obligations listed in their agreement.

None of the allegations have been proven in court. Pamela’s attorneys had not publicly responded to the claims when CBS and other outlets reported on the lawsuit.

After the case became public, Tenisha released a statement explaining that the lawsuit was not her first attempt to resolve the estate dispute.

“For the last year, I have attempted to privately settle my beloved husband’s complicated estate and honor his last wishes,” she said.

Tenisha maintained that Malcolm planned to replace the family trust he created years before he met her or became a father.

“Malcolm had every intention to provide for our 9-year-old daughter and me,” she said. “He was close to finalizing a new estate plan to replace the stale plan created in 1996 when he was 26-years-old, 20 years before we met and well before we gave birth to our beautiful daughter.”

Tenisha said Malcolm died before completing the new plan and claimed filing the lawsuit was necessary to preserve her and her daughter’s rights.

“I have been struggling to care for our daughter as a single mom and now as her sole provider,” she said. “Legally, I had no choice but to take action to protect our rights before any potential statute of limitations expired.”

Malcolm and Tenisha married in 2017 after meeting through a mutual friend. He kept his wife and daughter largely outside the public spotlight, but spoke proudly about their relationship shortly before his death. During a May 2025 podcast appearance, Malcolm called Tenisha his “soulmate” and said they had been together for nearly a decade without a fight, raised voice or harsh word.

That history makes the current legal tension even more painful. Tenisha is attempting to secure what she says Malcolm promised his wife and child, while Pamela controls the decades-old trust now at the center of the dispute.

Tenisha never accused Pamela of anything during the interview preview. Still, her decision to avoid answering whether the two women are close now appears less like a simple grief response and more like a glimpse at a complicated family breakdown that had not yet reached the public.
