(KRON) — A woman described by friends as the “sweetest little old lady” was stabbed to death at the Capitola Mall. Rachell Summers, 73, of Capitola, was attacked in broad daylight Monday afternoon, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office and police.

Local artists said Summers worked at the Art of Santa Cruz, a gallery that sells unique arts and crafts in the mall.

The Capitola Police Department wrote, “Our hearts remain with Rachell’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic and senseless act of violence.”

Shortly after the killing, police arrested Summers’ suspected killer, 19-year-old Tyler Leibelt of Santa Cruz, on 41st Avenue. CPD said detectives “believe this was a random act of violence, and there is no indication that the suspect knew the victim prior to the attack.”

Police said officers were first alerted about the mall stabbing at 12:47 p.m. Monday. They found Summers suffering from multiple stab wounds near the Macy’s store exit, and she died at the scene.

Leibelt was booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, inmate records show.

Investigators are now asking potential witnesses to come forward.

“Because this incident occurred in a public setting, detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the attack or have photographs, video recordings, or other information that may assist the investigation to contact the Capitola Police Department at 831-475-4242,” CPD wrote.

Detectives are working closely with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Unit and District Attorney’s Office.
