A jury convicted a Michigan man last week of murder after investigators said he mistook a traveling nurse's assistant from California for someone else. Jurors found Demetrius B. "Chuck" Williams guilty of first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm and other charges in the April 2025 homicide.
The deceased, Eliza Vega-Aparicio from Aguanga, California, was 27.
According to a GoFundMe campaign started by a family friend, Vega-Aparicio was a travel certified nurse's assistant and had worked in healthcare for more than seven years. She was in Saginaw, Michigan, for a work assignment in April 2025 and was staying at the home of a family friend, according to MLive.com.
During a hearing last year, a child in the home recalled the horrific morning to the court. After a man woke her to say he wouldn't harm her or the other children, the child said she heard gunshots around 4:15 a.m. The girl found Vega-Aparicio with two bullet wounds in her head.
Williams had recently separated from someone and, according to investigators, he thought the woman was in the house when he entered and mistook Vega-Aparicio for her. The Saginaw man was previously convicted of home invasion and felony firearm in 2024 and was on parole at the time.
Saginaw County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Blair N. Stevenson called it "a completely senseless murder."
The jury deliberated for about an hour before convicting Williams. His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 24, and he faces life in prison.
On the GoFundMe page, Vega-Aparicio was remembered for her love of art, books and music. "She loved her family and would give others unconditional love and compassion without any expectations," the page read.
