A 20-year-old mother died early Sunday morning after being shot through her bedroom window while sleeping beside her baby daughter in South Los Angeles.
The victim, identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as Maria Luisa Barrios Ventura, was inside her home on the 400 block of West 103rd Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood when gunshots broke out around 3:35 a.m., according to authorities.
Los Angeles Police Department officers arriving at the scene found Ventura suffering from gunshot wounds. Police sources indicated she was struck in the head. Paramedics responded and rendered aid, but Ventura was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ventura’s boyfriend, Omar Misael, said the family was sleeping in the same bed when the shooting happened. Misael said a stray bullet passed through the window and hit Ventura, followed by another seven shots that struck the surrounding area. He noted she died approximately 10 minutes later. Ventura was the mother of a 1-year-old girl.
Neighborhood resident Jose Chavez said the gunfire hit his property as well, damaging his car and window.
LAPD detectives are currently investigating the incident and looking into whether the shooting was targeted. No arrests have been made.
Following the shooting, Ventura’s aunt, Liliana Lopez, set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for funeral expenses, to send Ventura’s body back to her family in Guatemala, and to help care for her 1-year-old daughter.
Lopez stated that Ventura’s immediate family lives in Guatemala, leaving little local support for the child.
