This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed was not only a celebration where visitors spent four days surrounded by the smell of high octane fuel and burning tires, but also a kind of atmospheric phenomenon.
The bright July sun was already melting the asphalt at nine in the morning, while we approached the famous estate with its racing track from a dusty field transformed into a huge parking area for 20,000 cars.
However, the extreme temperatures did not stop a crowd of 200,000 visitors from arriving once again this year and gathering under the shade of centuries-old oak trees to witness the legendary automotive event held at the estate of Charles Gordon-Lennox, the 11th Duke of Richmond. This year more than ever, tradition collided with the future.
It also became clear that this was no longer just a gathering of enthusiasts, but one of the world’s most important technology laboratories, a stage where major automotive companies reveal their latest innovations rather than waiting for traditional motor shows.
The theme of this year’s edition was “Epic Racing Battles”. It was not just a marketing slogan, as the festival was filled with memories of famous rivalries such as Ford versus Ferrari at Le Mans, Lancia versus Audi in rally racing, and Yamaha against Suzuki in MotoGP, including the legendary rivalry between Kevin Schwantz and Wayne Rainey.
When stars such as Lando Norris, who arrived immediately after Silverstone to greet fans, Valentino Rossi, whose presence still creates excitement among supporters, and young Formula 1 talent Kimi Antonelli appear near the track, you realize you are in a place where the boundaries between idols and ordinary people disappear.
Watching these champions step out of their cockpits, whether they are driving modern machines or classic cars, shows the contrast that makes Goodwood a true sanctuary for millions of automotive and motorsport fans.
The central part of the event, at least regarding Gerry Judah’s famous art installation, belonged to Singer. As the main guest, the company did not come with small ambitions. A sculpture featuring three Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer models appeared on the lawn, representing three different philosophies that redefined the meaning of restomods.
Seeing these cars seemingly defy gravity while other Singer creations passed underneath was a reminder that the line between engineering and art becomes blurred at Goodwood. The importance of Singer in the automotive world is also shown by the fact that this was the first time a restomod workshop became the festival’s main guest.
Crowds
While crowds were fascinated by the V12 sounds of Gordon Murray’s machines, the brutal performance of Hennessey hypercars and extremely expensive racing classics from different eras, a new type of energy could be felt in the air: electric power.
This was not only because Ferrari presented its controversial Luce model, which was available only to VIP guests, but also because Chinese manufacturer BYD took center stage at this year’s festival in a way that shocked the automotive world.
Their stand was enormous. Built across three levels and covering 2,016 square meters, BYD created the largest exhibition space in the 33-year history of the festival.
This was not just a display of strength. It was a statement of ambition. Presenting eight new European models at once sent a clear message: “We are here, and we want more.”
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li showed confidence as the electric supercar Denza Z was unveiled behind her at the huge three-story structure. She was joined by the brand’s famous chief designer Wolfgang Egger and other leading BYD executives.
At the premiere, details about the Denza Z were revealed. With three electric motors, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in an incredible 1.96 seconds, while producing 1,604 horsepower, placing it among the elite of electric performance cars.
