Buda City Council member announces resignation, special election planned

Buda City Council Member Matt Smith announced he will resign from seat, prompting a special election that is expected to coincide with the Nov. 3 general election.

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Buda City Council Member Matt Smith announced Tuesday that he will resign from his seat representing At-Large Position 1, prompting a special election later this year.

Smith made the announcement during the July 21 City Council meeting. The council is expected to call a special election at its Aug. 4 meeting, with the race scheduled to coincide with the Nov. 3 general election. Voters will elect someone to serve the remainder of Smith’s unexpired term.

Smith’s resignation will not take effect immediately. Instead, he will remain in office until the newly elected council member is sworn in, according to the city.

Smith was first elected to the council in November 2020 to fill a vacancy and was re-elected in 2022 and 2025.

“Council Member Smith has been a valued member of the Buda City Council for nearly six years, and I am grateful for his dedication to serving our community,” Mayor Lee Urbanovsky said in a statement. “His willingness to continue serving until after the November election is a testament to his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and to the residents of Buda.”
