The release date is revealed for Brie Larson and J.J. Abrams' new horror movie.
Larson previously won an Academy Award for her performance in Room and received Primetime Emmy Award nominations for the Apple TV miniseries Lessons in Chemistry. She is also known for playing Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers in numerous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and has starred in Kong: Skull Island, Just Mercy, Fast X, and The Bear. Her most recent movie is 2026's The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, where she voiced Rosalina, and it is the first release of the calendar year to surpass $1 billion at the global box office.
Sony Pictures has now announced that Larson's upcoming movie, Skeletons,will be released in theaters on June 4, 2027. J.J. Abrams is producing via Bad Robot Productions, while JT Mollner directs and added revisions to the original script written by Brian Duffield. The story is based on Philip Fracassi's short story "Fail-Safe" and the adaptation is a modern take on the creature horror genre, in which a young boy learns about the dark secret that his parents are concealing about his mother's true nature.
Larson's co-stars include Kyle Gallner, Daithí Ó hAragáin, John Goodman, Willa Fitzgerald, Ione Skye, and Keith Carradine. This reunites Larson and Goodman after their roles in the 2017 Monsterverse movie Kong: Skull Island. The project is also a Strange Darling reunion, as Mollner wrote and directed the psychological crime thriller film, which features Gallner and Fitzgerald in the lead roles.
Fracassi previously revealed via his Instagram account that Skeletons began filming in late June. This comes after his short story was written 10 years ago, struggled to be sold to any publisher, ended up in his collection Behold the Void, and was selected to be among The Best Horror of the Year Volume Ten. It began to be shopped around Hollywood six years ago, with Abrams' Bad Robot aboard the potential adaptation. Larson and Mollner eventually joined as well, and Sony Pictures bought the project for $25 million in a bidding war that also included Paramount, Warner Bros., and Neon.
Skeletons is not Bad Robot's only upcoming movie, with the company producing The End of Oak Street, which hits theaters on August 14. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead the cast of the science-fiction survival movie directed and written by David Robert Mitchell, which sees a family fighting to survive after their neighborhood is transported and finds itself overrun with dinosaurs. On October 1, 2027, Bad Robot has The Great Beyond, starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, which is the first film Abrams has directed since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
When Skeletons comes to theaters on June 4, it will be competing against Lionsgate and AGBO's John Rambo prequel, which debuts on that date as well. Noah Centineo portrays the titular character previously played by Sylvester Stallone, who is executive producing the latest addition to the action franchise. The new installment is directed by Jalmari Helander and also stars David Harbour as Major Trautman, Yao, Jason Tobin, Jefferson White, and James Franco.
Skeletons arrives in theaters on June 4, 2027.
