Wedding planning is often expensive, but one bride-to-be has sparked outrage online after allegedly expecting her 17-year-old sister to spend more than $1,000 on pre-wedding celebrations in less than two months.
The dispute was shared on Reddit by user u/edajreiaglla, who detailed the growing financial pressure facing their teenage sister after their older sibling’s engagement earlier this year.
According to the post, the bride-to-be got engaged in March and is planning to marry in September. While the Reddit user admits they do not have a close relationship with their older sister, their 17-year-old sibling has been doing everything she can to support the wedding and participate as a bridesmaid.
The problem, however, is the soaring cost of doing so.
The teenager, who recently started a part-time job, is reportedly expected to cover her own expenses for several wedding-related events. Among the biggest costs is a week-long bachelorette trip, for which she is expected to contribute around $500 toward the rental alone.
“She’s a bridesmaid and is expected to come up with about $500 by the first week of August just for her share of the week-long bachelorette rental,” the Reddit user wrote. “That’s before food, activities, drinks, and spending money, which will easily cost another $500 or more. The wedding is less than two weeks after the bachelorette.”
The expenses do not stop there.
The poster said the bridal party’s professional hair and makeup package costs $450 per person, and claimed their younger sister was signed up for the service without being consulted. In addition, there is an upcoming bridal shower that requires attendees to purchase a matching outfit as well as a gift.
The mounting costs have left the teenager struggling to keep up. Tensions escalated after the bride reportedly accused her younger sister of not wanting to participate in the wedding because she had not yet ordered her bridesmaid dress.
The post continues: “About a week ago, my older sister accused my younger sister of ‘not wanting to be in the wedding’ because she hadn’t ordered her bridesmaid dress yet. My younger sister explained it had absolutely nothing to do with not wanting to be there. She simply couldn’t afford to order it yet. That apparently wasn’t enough.”
As a result, the younger sibling is said to be feeling increasingly anxious about the financial burden, while also worrying about disappointing family members. The bride and her fiancé offered to cover some of the costs, but the Reddit poster argued that accepting the money would come with strings attached.
According to the post, doing so would leave the teenager feeling “indebted indefinitely” and expected to repay the couple through favors and commitments long after the wedding celebrations are over.
Frustrated by the situation, the Reddit user turned to the r/weddingshaming subreddit, claiming their older sister “expects her 17-year-old sister to spend over $1,000 in less than 8 weeks.”
The post quickly gained traction, attracting more than 1,300 upvotes and hundreds of comments from shocked Reddit users. Many readers felt the teenager should step down from the bridal party altogether rather than continue struggling to meet the growing list of expenses.
“She should say no. You should too. This has ‘not the end of the expectations’ written all over it,” one commenter wrote.
Another Reddit user said: “At this point, Little Sis should bow out completely and attend the wedding as a regular guest. This is way too much and the expectations are insane to ask of anyone, let alone a 17 year old family member in these times.”
Others were even more critical of the bride’s alleged demands.
“The bride is a monster. Be glad you’re not going, and try to convince your younger sister that she doesn’t have to participate in the wedding and to never babysit again,” another person replied.
While one comment reads: “She’s seventeen. She probably shouldn’t even be going to the bachelorette party, and adults need to help this young person with expenses.”
