Brandon Sanderson is one of the most prolific sci-fi and fantasy authors of all time, and he'll officially be back with a new work this fall. A new tabletop RPG set in the Stormlightuniverse, Stormlight:War for Roshar, is set to release this fall and will be demoed later this month at Gen Con on July 30.
Gen Con attendees will also have the chance to purchase Shards of Creation, a new card game that takes place in Sanderson's interconnected Cosmere universe. Both games are the perfect way for Brandon Sanderson fans to dive deeper into the rich worlds that he's created.
Stormlight: War for Roshar Is Brandon Sanderson's Next Project
Stormlight: War for Roshar is an upcoming collaboration between Brandon Sanderson’s publishing company, Dragonsteel Entertainment, and Brotherwise Games. Designed by John D. Clair, the game is expected to launch its Kickstarter campaign this fall, with more details set to be revealed soon.
The game will allow players to create their own adventures within the broader world of Sanderson’s Cosmere novels. Dedicated Mistborn variants and sourcebooks are also scheduled for release later this year. Described as a three-hour epic, War for Roshar aims to combine the tactical depth of a traditional war game with an approachable ruleset that's newcomer-friendly.
Brotherwise Games is a Los Angeles-based board game publisher founded by brothers Chris and Johnny O’Neal. The company has grown into one of the industry’s most prominent independent publishers through games such as Boss Monster, Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, and the Cosmere Roleplaying Game. Brotherwise also developed Plotweaver, its proprietary board game storytelling system, which will power Stormlight: War for Roshar.
An expansion for Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game is also planned for this year. The upcoming expansion, The Well of Ascension, will include a new co-op mode but will also allow for competitive and solo play. It will feature many of the most popular characters from the Mistborn books, including Kelsier and Shan Elariel.
These upcoming games aren't the only Brandon Sanderson projects in the works. The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn are being developed for television at Apple TV, with Mistborn getting a film adaptation and The Stormlight Archive getting a TV series. Sanderson has said that the script for the first movie will be complete by this August, with the movie arriving in 2027 or later.
This is a fantastic time for longtime followers of the Cosmere, but it's also an amazing opportunity for newcomers to dive into the rich universe Sanderson has created. The Cosmere continues to expand through tabletop role-playing games, and with film and TV projects on the horizon, that universe is only going to grow deeper in the years to come.
