Stuart Fails to Save the Universe might not look exactly like what you’re expecting.
The upcoming Big Bang Theory spinoff series, which premieres July 23 on HBO, has some very short episodes — a move that its creators have no fancy explanation for.
Chuck Lorre, who created The Big Bang Theory, told Deadline that the series’ episodes are shorter because “we just felt that we’d successfully told the story,” even in some episodes as short as 15 minutes.
“To add would be padding, and padding, generally, is a hammock between important scenes, and why would we do that if there’s no real reason,” Lorre said.
“The historic length of a show is entirely arbitrary; it comes from network television, where a certain amount of advertising has to be sold to pay the way of making this television, but it’s not an element any longer in streaming,” Lorre explained. “So, why not just make the best show we can and hope the audience is entertained?”
Co-creator Bill Prady said that the team found their rhythm quickly and decided to stick with it. “We found it in the first episode where we wanted to go, ‘Everything’s all right. Oh wait, no, it isn’t.’ And that was fun, so we kept doing it,” he told the outlet.
In February, Lorre, 73, described the spinoff as a “science fiction action-adventure comedy.”
“We just finished principal photography, and I’m pretty excited about it,” he told PEOPLE. “It’s a big swing.”
“I think it will be revered or reviled. I’m not sure which,” he said candidly.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe brings back comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), who is “tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon,” per the official logline.
Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie are among the Big Bang Theory stars who also return to reprise their characters in the spinoff.
