BAE Systems is set to support the local manufacturing of the Light Gun artillery capability in Ukraine through a new licencing agreement with its strategic defence partner.
The agreement was signed at the ongoing Farnborough International Air show.
Under the terms of the agreement, BAE Systems will provide its partner with access to technical information and necessary support for production. The initial phase will focus on manufacturing a prototype gun for testing.
The partnership aims to develop a specific variant of the L119 Light Gun tailored to meet the operational needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The L119 Light Gun, a 105mm towed howitzer designed by BAE Systems, has been part of the British Army’s arsenal since 1975.
Known for portability and suitability for rapid response units, the system can be airlifted and supports firing ranges up to 17,200 meters beyond line-of-sight, according to company data.
BAE Systems stated that the agreement builds on its ongoing assistance to Ukraine and its efforts to enhance the country’s defence industry.
This latest development follows previous cooperation in 2023, when BAE Systems and Ukraine initiated joint exploration of domestic production possibilities for the 105mm Light Guns.
BAE Systems has also continued to invest in UK artillery capabilities, including efforts to rebuild domestic manufacturing capacity and to support the supply of British-designed 105mm and 155mm artillery barrels for Ukraine from Sheffield.
BAE Systems Weapon Systems UK engineering, technology and strategy director Giles Ambrose said: “This agreement brings together BAE Systems’ artillery expertise and our strategic defence partner’s knowledge of Ukraine’s operational requirements to support the development of sovereign capability where it’s needed most."
