Axel Sola says UFC loss earned more than 11 wins combined

Axel Sola calls his March loss to Mason Jones an alpha loss — the kind that pays better than an undefeated streak.

The French lightweight dropped a decision to Jones at UFC London after three rounds of back-and-forth striking that earned both fighters $100,000 Fight of the Night bonuses. Sola had entered that bout 11-0-1 and left without his zero, but also with more money and attention than the previous 11 victories had generated combined.

Sola told Sherdog that the setback improved him as a fighter. "Great experience," he said. "It definitely made me a better fighter. In one loss, I had more gain in visibility and money than in 11 wins. So, it was an alpha loss, let's say."

He faces Ismael Bonfim at UFC Abu Dhabi on July 25 at Etihad Arena. Bonfim is 2-3 inside the octagon and riding back-to-back stoppage losses. Sola wants more than a win — he wants another bonus-worthy performance.

"A win is good, but the quality of the win is even more important," he added. "The reward is better if I manage to put on a show."
