It seems this year’s summer is all about the sips, with dozens of new beverages launching across the tea, soda, and alcohol categories.

The canned cocktail companies have declared Blueberry Lemonade the flavor of the summer, with both Surfside and Sun Cruiser launching new Blueberry Lemonade spiked drinks. Dr Pepper is bringing back its tropical Creamy Coconut flavor. Mountain Dew has taken things up a notch, bringing back several fan-favorite flavors this season and packaging its iconic Baja Blast soda in retro glass bottles.

Now, A&W is stepping into the light with a new flavor that’s giving Mug’s latest Root Beer Floats Vanilla Howler Soda a run for its money—and fans are taking notice.

With dirty soda flavors continuing to grow in popularity, mainstream brands have joined the likes of soda shops Swig and Cool Sips to bring creamy, sweet soda to the masses. Dr Pepper all but started the mad dash to get dirty soda on shelves with its Creamy Coconut flavor, and now, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and Mug have followed suit.

So, with Mug’s new Root Beer Floats line of sodas now on shelves, it’s only natural that Keurig Dr Pepper’s A&W is hitting back with its own creamy, vanilla option.

A&W’s new Root Beer Float soda features a blend of sassafras and licorice-flavored, earthy root beer with the “vanilla-kissed” flavor and creamy mouthfeel of vanilla ice cream. It’s meant to emanate the flavors of a classic diner root beer float—without the need for a spoon.

This new root beer float-inspired soda is a direct follow-up to A&W’s ice cream sundae-flavored soda, which it launched last summer and included hints of hot fudge, vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, and cherry. The limited-edition Root Beer Float soda is hitting stores now in both classic and zero-sugar varieties.

So, what do fans think of A&W’s new soda? According to food insider @snackolator, it “has a great butterscotch taste to it” with “extra vanilla cream for even more decadence.” A fan who commented on @snackolator’s post added, “Mug has something similar out right now, and the A&W version is much better IMO [in my opinion].”

“I need this!” exclaimed someone else.

Even though Campbell’s just rolled out a whole new line of soups and pumpkin-spiced treats are slowly making their way into stores, it’s still peak summer in our books, which means there’s still plenty of time to sit back and enjoy A&W’s new creamy Root Beer Float sodas.
