Fans are already picking sides for December 18, and it’s not looking friendly. The Avengers: Doomsday trailer just reignited the growing rivalry between Marvel and Dune fans ahead of their shared release date.
Fans tease Avengers: Doomsday vs. Dune 3 won't be another Barbenheimer
Fans online are framing the December 18 clash between Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three as a battle rather than a shared event. Marvel Studios dropped its first full trailer on Monday with a poster stating, “12.18.26 is Doomsday.” The wording feels deliberate, as Denis Villeneuve’s threequel opens on the exact same date. Kevin Feige has also confirmed Marvel will not shift its release window.
Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet earlier attempted to defuse the rivalry. Downey appeared at a January Q&A for Marty Supreme alongside Chalamet. Together, they dubbed December 18 as “Dunesday.” Downey then joked, “We’ll see if we’re still friends by then” (via Variety). Audiences online, however, have adopted a far more competitive tone.
Reactions on social media following the Doomsday trailer skewed strongly toward Dune. One user wrote, “It’s called ‘Dunesday’ because I’m going to watch Dune and then call it a day.” The two films unveiled trailers within days of each other, intensifying the online divide. Dune supporters were especially harsh toward the Marvel footage.
The dynamic contrasts sharply with the 2023 “Barbenheimer” phenomenon. That moment paired a female-led comedy with an R-rated biographical drama. Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are both large-scale sci-fi spectacles chasing nearly the same audience. Warner Bros. further locked down an IMAX exclusivity agreement for Dune, pushing Disney to launch its own premium tier called Infinity Vision.
Marvel made another aggressive move by putting Doomsday tickets on sale Monday. The studio evidently wants moviegoers to commit to Avengers first. Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock struck a calmer note. He said, “Any number of films can survive during the holidays” (via TheWrap). The festive season offers both titles a wider window than other release periods. Dedicated fans of either franchise will almost certainly show up for both.
