The wait for the return of the biggest team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is almost over.
With only a few upcoming MCU movies and TV shows before The Multiverse Saga ends, the stakes are getting higher in Phase 6. While Spider-Man will have the spotlight this summer, December will focus on Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Tickets officially went on sale for Avengers: Doomsdayon July 20, as Marvel Studios shared the first trailer this week. Variety is reporting that the big MCU installment has generated $16.5 million in advance ticket sales. The trade notes that this is for the premium formats for 1000 domestic theaters, as the Marvel Studios film will not be shown in IMAX in the United States for the first three weeks due to Dune: Part Three having exclusivity.
Given past cases, Marvel movies have relied on IMAX, with a big percentage of the box office result coming from those screenings. But with these early numbers, it showcases that Avengers: Doomsday is still holding momentum, especially as Hollywood's superhero fatigue conversation continues to be a big talking point.
For comparison, the pre-sales are twice as high as the first-day figures were for 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, which ended up grossing $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office. Variety notes how that "included all formats and screens on sale."
The bigger question, however, is obviously how Avengers: Doomsday will perform in comparison to Infinity War and Endgame. As the Phase 3 entries came out during the MCU's most popular era, time will tell how the 2026 will perform in the current climate, since the box office game has changed significantly post-pandemic.
The Avengers: Doomsday cast is also clearly a crucial selling point for audience members, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU, but this time as the villainous Doctor Doom. Chris Evans is reprising the role of Steve Rogers, while several X-Men actors from the Fox-Marvel era will be back as the iconic mutants.
Doomsday is the first proper Avengers movie since Endgame, which has been one of the biggest missing factors throughout Phases 4 and 5, which focused on establishing new heroes in the MCU. The massive buzz is also coming at the perfect time, as Marvel Studios will be heading to San Diego Comic-Con this week, which includes their highly-anticipated Hall H presentation on Saturday, July 25.
After releasing the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, it's unknown what Kevin Feige will present during their Hall H panel. However, the ensemble entry is expected to be one of the big titles that will be highlighted.
Marvel Studios recently shared a new synopsis to tease what is in store for the big Avengers: Doomsday story: "Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. See it in Infinity Vision, the way it's meant to be seen, on bigger, brighter and more immersive screens."
However, there is still one more upcoming MCU movie that they have left to film before The Multiverse Saga is officially over. After helming Doomsday, Joe and Anthony Russo are set to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, as principal photography will kick off this summer.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18.
