Athletics infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer has landed on the 10-day injured list to recover from emergency surgery on a ruptured testicle, the team announced Tuesday.
Kuroda-Grauer suffered the injury when he fouled a pitch off his midsection in the top of the fifth inning of Monday’s 5-2 road win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He stayed in the game after getting tended to by the A’s medical staff and manager Mark Kotsay and finished the at-bat with a single.
Kuroda-Grauer had the procedure at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix and is “resting comfortably,” the team said in a statement.
The painful injury came as the 23-year-old was playing well in his first ever Major League stint. After making his MLB debut June 29, the 23-year-old is slashing .417/.435/.583 with 25 hits in 62 plate appearances. He’s had multiple hits in eight of his 16 games since getting promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas.
The A’s ahead of Tuesday’s game in Arizona recalled infielder Max Muncy from Triple-A in light of Kuroda-Grauer’s injury.
The A’s continue to deal with a series of injuries and through Monday had used 51 players, tied for third-most in MLB. They have a season-high 10 players on the injury list including All-Star first baseman Nick Kurtz and starting pitcher Luis Severino. The A’s entered Tuesday’s game, the second of their three-game series in Arizona, losers of seven straight series and 11 of their last 13 games.
