Apple TV's Lucky wastes no timegetting to the action. The series begins with Lucky and her partner, Cary, celebrating in a Las Vegas casino. Luciana "Lucky" Armstrong grew up as a con artist, guided by her father, who is now in jail. And after her latest plan goes wrong, she has to go on the run.
Lucky soon turns into a thrilling chase that begins at the casino and ends in the desert, with Lucky waking up to an FBI raid, her picture on the news, and Cary missing. But the police are not the only ones after Lucky. The latest heist Lucky and Cary pulled also got them on the wrong side of a dangerous crime boss.
The Apple TV series is filled with high-speed chases and fun action sequences, which are intercut with a few flashbacks that explore Lucky's past, her relationship with her father, and how she got to where she is now. At the same time, Lucky expands on the supporting characters, their motivations, and the connection they all share.
Lucky Has a Star-Studded Cast
Lucky stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Luciana "Lucky" Armstrong, but she's not the only talented star in the cast. The Apple TV series features a stellar ensemble that includes Timothy Olyphant as John Armstrong, Lucky's father, and Annette Bening as Priscilla Masterson, Cary's mother and a dangerous career criminal who is trying to find Lucky before the police do.
Lucky also stars Clifton Collins Jr. as Harris Dutch, Priscilla's enforcer, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as FBI Agent Billie Rand, the one leading the investigation on Lucky and Cary and their multimillion-dollar heist. Jonathan Tropper, known for creating the Apple TV dark comedy Your Friends & Neighbors, is also behind the TV adaptation of Lucky, based on Marissa Stapley's 2021 novel.
Marissa Stapley's Lucky was a Reese’s Book Club December 2021 Pick, Reese Witherspoon's book club. Witherspoon is also attached to the Apple TV series as an executive producer through her production company, Hello Sunshine. And while both stories follow Lucky running from the police and dangerous criminals, a key element makes the novel a must-read.
Apple TV's Lucky Removed One Major Storyline
Book adaptations aren't always faithful to their source material, and Apple TV's Lucky is no different. But there's one major storyline that drives the book forward that isn't part of the series. In Marissa Stapley's novel, Lucky buys a lottery ticket and wins a lot of money and has to find a way to cash it in without getting arrested.
The lottery ticket storyline moves the plot forward in the book, as Lucky tries to find someone to trust to cash the prize in her place while on the run. Apple TV's Lucky focuses more on the police and the criminals chasing Lucky, making it harder to also include the lottery ticket storyline in the adaptation.
Yet despite the changes, Lucky manages to deliver a thrilling story filled with action sequences, tapping into Anya Taylor-Joy's action star qualities already seen in The Gorge. Timothy Olyphant's performance as Lucky's father adds emotion and vulnerability to the story, as Lucky and her father's complex relationship is at the center of all the good and bad in her life.
Apple TV's Lucky still has many episodes left. The action thriller is set to consist of 7 episodes, and after the 2-episode premiere on July 15, new episodes will be released every Wednesday. Lucky is a fun, fast-paced storyline with strong performances, led by one of the best actresses of her generation, making it an instant classic.
