Widow’s Bay Is The Best New Horror Binge On Television
Already touted as one of the best horror series of the 21st century, Widow’s Bay is an exquisitely crafted but immensely enjoyable contemporary spin on the classic “island of mystery” genre trope. Set in a fictional location off the Atlantic coast, Parks and Recreation writer Katie Dippold’s creation is heavily inspired by the work of native New Englander Stephen King.
While King himself isn’t the show’s biggest fan, he’s missing the point of Widow’s Bay, which applies the traits of a subversive cringe comedy to a genuinely disturbing tale of supernatural menace. The series is shot and soundtracked as well as any Mike Flanagan release of recent years, and is deadly serious about horror when it needs to be.
Widow’s Bay somehow balances reverence for the genre, subtle originality, and shrewdly executed humor with sublime poise throughout its first season. The real secret of its success is a set of screen performances that get the brief, and go above and beyond to bring viewers with them into the world of the show.
Kate O'Flynn’s portrayal of Widow's Bay mayoral assistant Patricia Moyer, in particular, manages to blend the sinister, the surreal, and the sidesplittingly hilarious to perfection. The series makes full use of her extraordinary range, both for standout comedic set pieces, and moments of real terror.
With season 2 of Widow’s Bay already on the way, now is the ideal time to binge the show’s first installment. With a total runtime of around 7 hours, season 1 is bingeable in a single setting, which is just as well given how addictive it is.
The Show Is In Contention To Win The Emmy For Outstanding Comedy Series
Although Emmy predictions are far from an exact science, Widow’s Bay is currently many people’s tip to win in one of the two biggest categories, Outstanding Comedy Series, at the 2026 primetime awards ceremony. Despite not being the bookies’ favorite at this stage, the show has more critical buzz around it than any other in the category.
It faces stiff competition from HBO’s Hacks, which could end up collecting the prize for sentimental reasons, as it bows out after five seasons at the top of its genre. However, it isn’t as though this comedy-drama about an aging standup comedian is overdue an Emmy, having previously won in the same category back in 2024.
Widow’s Bay is the TV series that most deserves recognition this time around, regardless of the goodwill towards Hacks following its admittedly excellent series finale. Still, even if Apple TV’s new comedy-horror masterpiece doesn’t win for its first season, it’s likely to have plenty more chances to scoop multiple Emmys in major categories over the next few years.
