Apple could finally cross a line it has avoided for nearly two decades with its 20th anniversary iPhone

Apple is internally testing a display measuring approximately 6.96 inches for its 20th-anniversary iPhone, marking the first reported increase in screen size for the 2027 commemorative device.

If the panel moves from prototype to production, Apple would almost certainly market it as a 7-inch display.

The current iPhone 17 Pro Max ships with a 6.9-inch screen, meaning buyers who hold out for the anniversary model could be looking at the largest iPhone Apple has ever sold.

What a 7-Inch iPhone Actually Means to Use

At 7 inches, the screen would push comfortably into tablet territory for single-handed tasks. Reading, watching video, and working across two apps simultaneously all become considerably more practical at that size.

Apple last grew its Pro Max display in 2024, when the iPhone 16 Pro Max moved from 6.7 to 6.9 inches by slimming down the bezels rather than making the physical chassis dramatically larger.

The report noted the screen proportions match the current Pro Max aspect ratio, which suggests Apple is not fundamentally rethinking the shape of the phone, just expanding it.

Whether that translates into a body that fits a jacket pocket or requires two hands for routine typing remains to be seen.

The 2027 Anniversary iPhone Is Shaping Up Differently

Bloomberg reported last month that Apple has been accelerating development on two sizes of the anniversary iPhone, and earlier rumors have consistently pointed toward curved glass wrapping around all four edges for a nearly borderless look.

Combined with a larger screen, that design would represent the most significant physical change to the iPhone Pro Max since Apple introduced the larger form factor.

By contrast, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max arriving this September are expected to stay at the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch dimensions as the current iPhone 17 Pro lineup. Anyone expecting a bigger screen this fall will need to wait another year.
