The filing in Los Angeles County Superior Court asks that her legal name be changed to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. Court documents list her reason as "personal" but provide no further explanation.
Vivienne signed the name-change petition on July 12, her 18th birthday, before it was filed with the court on July 20, according to Entertainment Weekly. A hearing is currently scheduled for Nov. 2.
The requested change has not yet been approved. Until a judge grants the petition, her legal name remains Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt.
Vivienne had already used the shortened version of her name publicly. In May 2024, she was credited as "Vivienne Jolie" in the Playbill for the Broadway production of The Outsiders. She worked on the Tony Award-winning musical alongside her mother, who served as a lead producer.
Vivienne is the latest of Jolie and Pitt's six children to pursue a legal change involving the Pitt surname.
Her older sister Shiloh filed a petition on her 18th birthday in May 2024 to change her name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie. A judge granted that request in August 2024.
Zahara and Maddox have also filed separate petitions. Zahara is seeking to become Zahara Marley Jolie, while Maddox has requested the name Maddox Chivan Jolie. According to People, both requests remain pending, with Zahara's hearing scheduled for Sept. 28 and Maddox's set for Sept. 14.
Zahara had publicly used "Zahara Marley Jolie" before filing her petition, including when she introduced herself during a 2023 Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority event. As with Vivienne, however, using a different name publicly is separate from completing a legal name change.
Each sibling's filing is an individual legal request at a different stage of the court process. None of the available court documents establishes that the petitions were part of a coordinated family decision, and the stated reason for the requests has not been publicly expanded beyond "personal."
Jolie and Pitt share six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne. The former couple separated in 2016 after two years of marriage and finalized their divorce in late 2024, although they remain involved in a separate legal dispute concerning Château Miraval, the French winery they once jointly owned.
Neither Vivienne nor her parents has publicly explained the specific circumstances behind her petition. Representatives for Jolie and Pitt have been contacted by other outlets for comment.
Vivienne's requested name change will remain pending until the court rules on the petition. The scheduled Nov. 2 hearing could also be changed before the case is heard.
