Radeon is ready for its second coming, and Nvidia isn't prepared

Two years ago, if I were asked to recommend a GPU for a new build, I'd have an entire list of reasons as to why one should go for GeForce RTX over Radeon graphics. But two years is quite a long time when it comes to the silicon industry.

In 2024, I'd make the same old arguments about CUDA, NVENC, and the broader software ecosystem in favor of Nvidia. To be fair, one would only need to hear these three arguments before making a purchase decision. But now, in hindsight, it seems that AMD took it upon itself to dismantle these facets in the first half of 2026 itself.

As a matter of fact, Team Red seems to have accomplished this quick enough that most buyers still haven't updated their assumptions. Here's why a Radeon GPU might actually be the better buy, and none of the reasons have anything to do with gaming.

ROCm has progressed at the speed of light

Discrete GPUs are no longer just used for high-end gaming. To be fair, they've always enjoyed their own special use-cases throughout the last five years, from running scientific simulations, to crypto mining, and recently, local AI inference. In many tasks, Nvidia used to enjoy a special status and an advantage over AMD thanks to the CUDA platform. The release of LLaMa weights, followed by the subsequent release of llama.cpp acted as a catalyst in driving the local AI wave.

At that point, AMD was barely in the conversation. ROCm existed, but it was a Linux-only stack aimed at data center Instinct cards, with a compatibility list that read like it was written to exclude the GPU you owned. Running a model on a Radeon card involved unofficial builds, environment variable overrides, and going through copious amounts of documentation. Buying Nvidia was almost a no-brainer.

As such, it's almost shocking to see AMD's development in ROCm since that time. ROCm 7.2, unveiled at CES this January, marked the platform's biggest shift yet by arriving as a single release for both Windows and Linux. AMD says its supported Ryzen and Radeon hardware list has doubled over the past year, but the more encouraging change is how quickly that support has started showing up in the software people use. Official ROCm support landed on the Windows version of ComfyUI Desktop the very same month, while RDNA 4 cards like the RX 9070 XT joined AMD's official consumer support list with day-zero support for new releases.

One of the clearest signs of a platform maturing is what happens whenever a new model launches. When Google shipped Gemma 4 in April, AMD provided day zero support for the full model family across its data center lineup, Radeon GPUs, and Ryzen AI processors with integration spanning LM Studio, vLLM, SGLang, llama.cpp and Ollama. This list almost comprehensively covers the local AI toolchain a desktop user touches, working on launch day, rather than after a dozen community patches.

Gemma is just the most consumer-visible example. OpenAI's GPT-OSS-120b and GPT-OSS-20B also received day-zero support across cloud and client systems, while Llama 4 and DeepSeek arrived with the same out-of-the-box readiness in the ROCm 7 ecosystem. Clearly, AMD is determined to prove that launch-day support isn't something that just Nvidia is capable of, and the community seems to have taken notice of the fact.

The media engine gap closed when no one was watching

AMD's encoder has always trailed behind Nvidia's NVENC. The reason for AMD always living in the shadow of NVENC in this arena was the fact that its encoding always had a couple of problems in its way. AMF needed higher bitrates to match NVENC's fidelity, and that was one of the reasons why gamers and creators consistently preferred GeForce over Radeon for streaming and recording.

This generation feels different, though. With RDNA 4, AMD finally seems to have closed the platform's longest-standing feature gaps by adding B-frame support to its AV1 encoder. This is particularly important for creators, because B-frames are what let an encoder hold quality at lower bitrates, leading to smaller files and cleaner streams without needing more powerful hardware in the rig.

Team Red has claimed substantially better H.264 image quality at 1080p and 6Mbps versus the RX 7900 XTX, and separately, an 11% uplift in HEVC encoding quality. This matters to a great extent because it finally means that Team Red has, with success, removed many of the reasons creators instinctively defaulted to GeForce graphics in the first place. Sure, one could argue that these upgrades are incremental, but it's still worth appreciating that creators have more options in the GPU space besides the top-of-the-line and mid-range Blackwell cards that no one can seem to find at MSRP in the current retail market.

Radeon is becoming better every day

I don't mean to say that AMD has flat-out defeated Nvidia in the GPU arena. A Radeon GPU isn't suddenly better than the closest GeForce competitor, but the gap isn't huge enough to justify a hundred dollar premium over the former anymore, either. ROCm continues to get better, Team Red is as proactive as it can be when it comes to day-zero model support, and the encoder isn't as big a compromise that most users who haven't kept up with the developments would come to assume. This would require many new builders to revisit their value matrices at the checkout counter, especially if the RX 9070 XT is found retailing in the mid-range segment.
