The Grammy Award-winning singer shares her kids with her ex-partner Gerard Piqué, the legendary soccer player from Barcelona. Though they never married, the couple were together for 11 years before calling it quits in 2022.
Shakira and Piqué welcomed Milan and Sasha in 2013 and 2015, respectively. After becoming a mom of two, the She Wolf singer called parenting one of the most difficult things she’s done.
“I’ve been on the most challenging stages performing in front of really demanding audiences and I’ve been meeting with world leaders who sometimes make you a little bit apprehensive, but nothing has made me so self-conscious as being a mom,” she told People in 2020. “Every day I wonder if I’m doing the right thing. I just want to improve in the job, the hardest job on earth.”
Part of the job, Shakira says, is maintaining some semblance of normalcy. “I can’t deny they can’t escape the reality that I’m a public person, as well as their dad,” Shakira once told ET Canada, per People. “But we try to provide as much normalcy as we can, and live really as very simple people.”
In 2023, Shakira moved her family from Barcelona to Miami to provide her kids with a fresh start post-breakup. The “Whenever, Wherever” singer called the relocation a “new chapter in the search for happiness” in a heartfelt Instagram post. While she was worried about how they’d adjust, picking them up from their first day of school in Miami calmed her fears. “[T]hey jumped on me and hugged me and said, ‘We love it!’” she recalled to Rolling Stone in a 2024 cover story.
Ahead, here’s everything to know about Shakira’s two sons, Milan and Sasha, both of whom are following in their mom’s musical footsteps.
Milan Piqué Mebarak
Shakira and Piqué welcomed their firstborn son on January 22, 2013 in Barcelona. In a statement shared with the press, the couple explained the meaning behind Milan’s name. “The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification,” the couple said, per CNN. They jokingly added that, “Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth.”
Milan quickly became acquainted with both of his parents’ passions. He joined his mom on the set of The Voice a few months after his arrival and attended the FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil the following year.
In 2021, Shakira shared a video of Milan playing a “virtual concert” on the piano. Two years later, she gushed about both her sons’ musical talents in another Instagram post. “This year, Milan has written songs that have brought me to tears of emotion and Sasha has spent hours at the piano, finding his voice,” the proud mom wrote. “Milan and Sasha, it’s so nice to see how you spread your wings and follow your dreams! There is nothing that makes me more fulfilled than being your mother.”
Milan also turned to music during his parents’ break-up. Shakira opened up about how her eldest processed the split in a 2024 interview with Zane Lowe. “I remember he wrote two beautiful songs during the whole separation process,” she said. “He wrote two songs on piano and lyrics. And whenever he feels a little down, he goes to the piano and he writes. And that also is his catharsis, his therapy. I think he’s probably going to be a producer, but he’s obsessed with football.”
Another creative avenue he’s exploring? Acting. Shakira’s two sons had a small part in 2025 animated hit Zootopia 2, voicing main character Judy Hopps’s little brothers. They worked alongside their mom, who plays fictional pop star Gazelle. At the film’s November 2025 premiere, where the trio wore matching purple Stella McCartney ensembles, Milan was asked by On The Red Carpet if he feels like an actor.
“I’m starting to feel [like one],” he said, adding, “I hope that I can make other voiceovers.”
More recently, the family have been enjoying the 2026 World Cup, attending the June 22 match between Argentina and Austria at Texas’s AT&T Stadium, per Hola!. Shakira, who’s set to co-headline the first World Cup Final halftime show, told People in June 2026 about her family’s personal connection to the game. (She met her ex-partner at the 2010 World Cup after writing the official song, “Waka Waka.”)
“That’s why I call my kids the ‘Waka’ kids; I think they were born because of that song,” she explained. “That song took me to the World Cup, the World Cup had an important impact in my life, and they were born — the best thing that has happened to me.”
Sasha Piqué Mebarak
Little brother Sasha arrived on January 29, 2015 in Barcelona. The couple explained the meaning of his name on Shakira’s website, per People: “The name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means ‘defender of mankind’ and ‘warrior,’” they wrote.
The mom-of-two has since described her second son as “my little athlete.” Sasha plays tennis and soccer and enjoys surfing and karate. In 2022, he even won first place in a martial arts contest. “Next time if they don’t want me to yell so much they’ll have to take me with a muzzle!” Shakira joked on Instagram.
Like his brother, Sasha also has a passion for music. In 2023, his mom revealed that he had created the artwork for her “Monotonia” single using an iPad. “I didn’t like what the designers at Sony had created, and I asked Sasha what he thought about it,” the “Waka Waka” singer told Hola!. “He said, ‘No mami, Iet me do it,’ and he started making it on his iPad. He sent it to me and I sent it to people at Sony. I think kids have a special sensibility and I listen to them.”
In December 2025, Sasha and big brother Milan joined their mom on stage for a surprise rendition of her song “Acróstico” in Buenos Aires. The show was part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. After the family’s performance, Shakira took to Instagram to share a snap from the special show. In the caption (translated from Spanish), she wrote, “Buenos Aires, thank you for this moment that will stay with us forever. It was magical singing with my children and seeing them bring out the music they carry inside, all while watching entire families singing and hugging each other too! ❤️❤️❤️.”
Shakira reflected on raising her sons post-split from their father in her 2026 People cover story. “Motherhood makes you strong. The moment I became a mother, I saw life through a different perspective, and my kids are not only the best thing that happened to me, but I’ve learned so much from them every day,” she said.
In the same interview, she shut down the idea of dating in the near future. “I’m just thinking of raising my kids. I don’t see that for now,” she explained, adding, “Maybe when they’re older.”
