As the San Francisco 49ers prepare for the 2026 season, there is no denying that pressure will be put on quarterback Brock Purdy from the football world. With the 49ers quarterback in Purdy looking to prove his value, former signal-caller Alex Smith would speak on what makes the star special.
Speaking on the “Up & Adams” show with Kay Adams, Smith would start by talking about how “one of the best strengths” of Purdy is leading a drop-back team, which he credits to him and head coach Kyle Shanahan. Plus, the former San Francisco quarterback would mention how Purdy is an “above-average athlete.”
“I think the other thing that jumps out with Brock is he’s an above-average athlete. Like I think even in the world of NFL quarterbacks, he doesn’t get enough credit,” Shanahan said. “There’s like the one stat I always love is like his 10-yard 40 split was better than Christian McCaffrey’s. Like this guy can really run around and make some plays with his legs. And those two things, you kind of combine them, and obviously, being a really smart player as well and competitive, I think they’re going to be there a long time.”

Alex Smith continues what he loves about 49ers’ Brock Purdy
Looking at Purdy’s last season with the 49ers, as he dealt with some injuries, such as turf toe and a shoulder issue, he threw for 2,167 yards to go along with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in nine games. Another aspect that Smith loves about Purdy is how much of a “great perspective” he has within the game.
“He’s so mature to make a couple mistakes early, these interceptions, like it just doesn’t faze Brock,” Smith continued. “He doesn’t carry it with him to the next play…He has this innate ability…You forget how young he is when you’re around him. He’s so mature. He has such a good head on his shoulders. And again, he has like great perspective.”
Purdy and San Francisco look to improve this upcoming season after going 12-5, finishing third in the NFC West, and losing to the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round.
