There is always some mind-blowing, world-building event to look forward to with every new issue of Absolute Batman. Or, at least, that has seemingly been its modus operandi so far.
However, it appears that the smash-hit DC Comics series is about to experience a major change to its trajectory very soon. The creator of the Absolute Universe, Scott Snyder, confirmed this himself.
Absolute Batman #25 Will Launch A New Era For The Series
Scott Snyder recently appeared on the AIPT Comics Podcast, during which his greatest success story yet, Absolute Batman, was inevitably brought into the conversation. The acclaimed author ended up dropping a few juicy details regarding the longevity of the mega-popular series following a working-class Bruce Wayne.
Snyder previously confirmed that he has Absolute Batman fully planned through Issue #50, which will mark the end of the series' first major arc. However, he also teases that what he and artist Nick Dragotta have delivered so far is nothing compared to what is to be expected in the second half of this storyline.
"The story that we pitched, and you see is the story that lands over about 50 things, but we’re already thinking about what would be on the other side of that. So, the second half of this 50 issue stretch is really about now letting these pieces really clash and interact and grow."
What Snyder seems to indicate here is that everything leading up to around Absolute Batman #25 is meant to establish all the most important elements of this interpretation of Gotham City. Yet, it will be at that point that he and Dragotta allow themselves free rein to go completely batty with the characters and plot points they have introduced.
Some might call the most essential Absolute Batman moments so far, from Bruce's arena fight with Absolute Bane to the reveal of Absolute Joker's demonic true form, pretty "batty" already. So, it is anybody's guess how things are going to turn out during the next couple of years or so.
Scott Snyder Promises A "Punishing" Absolute Batman Arc
During his AIPT Comics Podcast visit, Scott Snyder was also very open about what fans can expect from Absolute Batman going forward in terms of tone. For instance, he mentions that he and Nick Dragotta "go for a real density" with the plotting they envision, which is bred from their shared love of Japanese manga — a detail that has not been lost on many critics.
However, while he is known to throw in a healthy amount of subtlety throughout the series, he promises that most of what he has planned is "dialed up to 11" and refuses to take "its foot off the gas through [Issue 50]." He concludes that these "bombastic" and highly emotional moments will culminate in a storyline that "is going to be pretty punishing."
The midpoint of the first major Absolute Batman arc is quickly approaching, as the next chapter coming to the stands is Absolute Batman #23. This will feature the official debut of the much-teased Absolute Clayface, and will hopefully confirm or debunk fan theories suggesting that the shapeshifting villain was really the imprisoned man Scarecrow identified as Thomas Wayne at the end of Issue #22.
Due to its rousing success right out of the gate and ever-increasing influence since, Absolute Batman has already inspired an animated series that is currently in the works, with Snyder serving as showrunner and Dragotta signed on as an executive producer. Fans will have to see if the series' current arc will conclude by the time it launches its much-anticipated premiere.
Absolute Batman #23 hits the shelves on Aug. 12, 2026.
