Unless you attend Hogwarts, it's not every day that an owl flies into someone's bedroom. Normally, these wild birds keep to themselves as they hunt for their meals, but Meg Luke was shocked when a barn owl appeared through her window on July 9.
The owl, however, was just happy to be there! He let himself in and explored the bedroom without a care in the world, but Meg only had more and more questions. Clearly, he's someone's pet owl, but where did he come from, and what could she do next?
What a curious little bird! Even though Meg has never seen the owl before, he acts like he's exactly where he was supposed to be. Are we sure he's not really from Hogwarts?
"He's come to make sure you keep up with your Duolingo," commented @ripper_gsd. That explains it! He must be the Duolingo owl, and he just got a makeover to get rid of that gaudy green color.
In all seriousness, what was this pet owl doing here? The mystery only gets deeper as the owl gets comfy in his new friend's bedroom. The band around his leg tells everyone he's not a wild animal, but that's not the first animal anyone would expect to visit in the middle of a heatwave.
"That’s not just an owl; that’s a barn owl," explains @lucybee3, "and you are so lucky, as that’s rare. He may need water." Luckily, the bird found respite from the heat when he needed it most, and it wasn't long until he was back home, too.

Not long after the incident, Meg shared the update everyone had been waiting for. The owl was finally back at home, where he stays as a free-range pet. He sometimes flies away, but he always comes back!
What a relief! It's impossible to stay mad at the owl's adorable face, especially when he tilts his head and poses for photos. He's a smart and clever boy, but he's still learning to use his wiles for good, not chaos!

Pet owls are rare because wild animals typically do not make good pets, but some owls who are unable to thrive in the wild find their forever homes before they even learn to fly. Remember, owls are birds of prey that require expert care, so not anyone can just pick up an owl and keep it as a pet. If you find an owl in need of help, please contact a local animal rescue.
If you find an owl who just needs help getting home, however, don't be afraid to check local social media pages and neighborhood groups. Someone could be missing a pet!
