Scientists have produced the most detailed map ever made of the ground beneath Antarctica’s ice, revealing a hidden landscape of mountain ranges, deep valleys, and ancient river channels. Created using a combination of satellite data and ice-flow modeling, the map shows how this buried topography influences the movement and stability of the ice above.

Published in the journal Science, the research fills major gaps in our understanding of Antarctica’s underlying bedrock. Until now, large portions of the continent remained poorly mapped because aerial and on-the-ground surveys are extremely difficult in such remote, harsh conditions. With this new dataset, scientists can now visualize the continent’s foundation in high definition for the first time.

Ancient Rivers and Massive Valleys Uncovered

According to the latest research published in the journal Science, the new map reveals features ranging from 1.2 to 18.6 miles beneath the surface, structures that were either unknown or misunderstood. Among them are river channels extending hundreds of miles, likely remnants of a landscape that existed long before the ice sheet formed. These rivers, now buried, suggest that parts of Antarctica once featured active fluvial systems that shaped the bedrock long before the region froze.

In one region, earlier air-based surveys had predicted a gentle, ancient river basin. But the new data exposed something very different: steep, deeply carved valleys, indicating a much more rugged terrain than previously thought. This shift in understanding could help explain regional variations in ice behavior, particularly in how and where it melts or flows faster.

Tectonic Borders Beneath the Ice

One of the most striking insights from the map is the detection of sharp elevation transitions, evidence of buried tectonic features. These steep contrasts between lowland basins and uplifted highlands point to ancient fault zones or boundaries between crustal blocks, long concealed by the continent’s thick ice cover.

These tectonic structures may help explain why certain glaciers move differently across Antarctica. Ice tends to flow faster over smoother, deeper terrain and slows down over rough or elevated areas. By showing where these features lie, the map helps researchers pinpoint natural chokepoints or zones of resistance in the ice flow. This kind of detail has been difficult to capture until now due to the limitations of past survey techniques.

Combining Technologies To Fill The Gaps

The team achieved this high-resolution view by merging multiple sources of data: satellite surface elevation maps, measurements of ice thickness, and models based on the physics of ice movement. These were blended to generate a more consistent and complete map, even in areas where data had previously been sparse or inconsistent.

This approach made it possible to correct past errors and uncover previously unseen subglacial features. The result is a map that doesn’t just fill in the blanks, it redraws large portions of the Antarctic landscape as we know it. For scientists studying ice sheet evolution, sea-level rise, and climate interactions, this new tool offers a much clearer foundation for future research.
