The agency expects increased auroral activity as charged particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, creating opportunities for observers in 12 states to witness the northern lights farther south than usual.

The event is linked to a stream of fast-moving solar wind released from a coronal hole on the Sun. As these particles travel toward Earth and connect with the planet’s magnetic environment, they can trigger glowing atmospheric displays commonly known as the northern lights.

The predicted activity follows a period when auroras have become more frequent across the U.S. due to the Sun approaching the peak of its current 11-year solar cycle. During this phase, increased solar activity can send stronger bursts of energy toward Earth, expanding the regions where auroras may become visible.

NOAA Tracks Solar Activity Bringing Aurora Opportunities

According to NOAA, the incoming solar wind stream is expected to create a geomagnetic disturbance capable of increasing aurora visibility overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. The agency forecasts a Kp index reaching around four on Tuesday and five on Wednesday, placing conditions within the range where auroras may appear at lower latitudes than normal.

The Kp index measures global geomagnetic activity on a scale from zero to nine. Higher values indicate stronger disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field and a greater chance that the aurora oval will expand toward populated areas farther from the Arctic regions.

NOAA’s forecast places the potential viewing area across Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Maine, along with northern sections of Washington, Idaho, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

The agency notes that visibility depends on several conditions, including cloud cover, local light pollution, and the exact strength of the geomagnetic storm when it arrives. Even within the predicted zone, observers may need dark skies and patience to spot the changing colors of the aurora.

Where Americans Could See The Northern Lights

The latest forecast highlights a wide section of the northern United States as a possible viewing region. Areas closer to the Canadian border generally have the highest chance of seeing the display because they sit closer to the typical path of the auroral oval.

In Alaska, where auroras are regularly observed, the event could provide another opportunity for clear views of the dancing lights. In northern states such as Minnesota, Michigan, and Maine, observers may also have opportunities if geomagnetic conditions strengthen during the night.

The best viewing window is usually between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, according to NOAA guidance. People hoping to see the aurora should look for locations away from city lighting, choose open areas with a clear northern horizon, and allow their eyes time to adjust to darker conditions.

Auroras can change rapidly, appearing as faint green glows before developing into brighter waves and curtains across the sky. The strongest displays occur when solar activity creates stronger interactions between charged particles and Earth’s magnetic field.

Solar Maximum Continues To Influence Aurora Activity

The increased number of visible aurora events across the United States is connected to the current period of heightened solar activity known as solar maximum. Scientists expected this phase of the Sun’s cycle to bring more frequent solar eruptions, though activity levels have exceeded some earlier predictions.

Since 2024, several significant geomagnetic storms have allowed the northern lights to appear across unusually large areas of the country. These events have attracted millions of skywatchers, photographers, and researchers interested in studying the relationship between solar activity and Earth’s atmosphere.

The Sun’s activity is expected to gradually decline later in the decade as the solar cycle moves away from its peak. For now, each incoming solar wind event provides another opportunity to observe one of nature’s most visible connections between space weather and life on Earth.

For observers across the northern United States, this latest forecast offers a chance to experience a rare sky phenomenon created millions of miles away by activity on the surface of the Sun.
