A man who faked his own death by staging an elaborate funeral and climbing into a coffin was caught by law enforcement after spending months on the run. Prosecutors in Henan province confirmed that a suspect identified by his surname Si was tracked down in Yunnan province on April 27, 2026, ending a long cross-country manhunt.
The legal trouble began in January 2025 when police caught Si for driving under the influence of alcohol. Investigators soon discovered that Si had two prior convictions for drunk driving without a valid driver’s license. As reported by Dexerto, released on bail, Si faced severe criminal charges, hefty court fines, and growing personal debts. Facing a guaranteed jail sentence that would ruin his financial future, Si decided to stage his own death to escape the criminal justice system.
The elaborate scheme kicked off in June 2025 when Si’s mother and grandmother reported to local authorities that he had died from taking poison. To make the scene look real, Si bought a wooden coffin in advance, scattered empty medicine bottles around his house, and used cooling equipment on his body to lower his skin temperature. By the time police officers arrived at the home, his family claimed his body was already placed inside the coffin and buried in the ground, preventing officers from checking the remains.
The Man Staged His Funeral
Investigators quickly found major holes in the family’s story during the initial review. Police questioned why no one called for emergency medical help or tried to take Si to a hospital after the alleged poisoning. Officers also discovered that the family bought the coffin before his supposed death and could not produce a medical death certificate, cremation records, or official paperwork.
Police added Si to the national wanted list after phone records, bank transactions, and street camera footage showed he was still alive. Officers eventually located Si in southwestern China and took him into custody without further incident. During police questioning, Si admitted that he staged the fake death because he feared the legal consequences of his repeated traffic violations.
“I already had previous drunk-driving violations. I knew I would be sentenced and fined this time. I am heavily in debt, and with a criminal record, my life is over,” Si said. A judge sentenced Si to five months in detention for dangerous driving and ordered him to pay court fines. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers opened criminal investigations into his mother and grandmother for helping him hide from the law.
