With the NCAA football season approaching, The Athletic is releasing its list of the best college football quarterbacks for 2026. Despite several returning stars including Oregon’s Dante Moore and Notre Dame’s CJ Carr, another play caller is getting ranked no. 1.

That quarterback is Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss.

“Trinidad is probably the best one (in the SEC),” an SEC assistant said to The Athletic. “I think he’s a baller.”

Chambliss is returning to an Ole Miss team who went to the College Football Playoff a year ago. He will be playing for head coach Pete Golding, after suiting up for most of last year for Lane Kiffin.

“Chambliss was largely unknown at this time a year ago, a D-II transfer slated to back up Austin Simmons. Instead, he became one of college football’s best, leading the Rebels to the College Football Playoff semifinals. He appealed for and won an extra year and heads into 2026 with Heisman Trophy hype,” the outlet added.

Other SEC coaches have a lot of respect for the Ole Miss quarterback. During the 2025 season, Chambliss threw for 3,937 passing yards and 22 touchdowns.

“He’s a winner. He’s a gamer,” an SEC general manager said. “Should have a ton of confidence and has a ton of experience.”

Chambliss enters the 2026 season without a lot of NFL hype around him. He is considered to be too small by critics, to be an NFL starting quarterback.

“He’s not considered an elite NFL prospect in large part because of his size, which is why he’s still in the SEC. With Lane Kiffin gone, he’ll have a new head coach, play caller and several new receivers, which has opponents intrigued. But nobody we spoke with has doubts about Chambliss doing his part,” the outlet added.

Ole Miss opens the 2026 college football season against Louisville. That game is on September 6.
