Residents of Sumner County will soon have access to expanded healthcare services, including the county’s only inpatient pediatric unit, at the Highpoint Health Sumner Station campus.
The $59.3 million project is expected to bring advanced cardiac care, surgical capabilities and more inpatient services closer to home, according to Highpoint Health with Ascension Saint Thomas officials.

"This approval represents an important milestone not only for our organization, but for the families who live in and around Sumner County," Highpoint Health with Ascension Saint Thomas Market President Rod Harkleroad said.
"As the community's healthcare needs evolve, we are committed to ensuring patients have access to the care they need close to home. Adding these additional services will enable us to provide timely, high-quality care while helping patients remain connected to their support systems during treatment and recovery," Harkleroad said.
The expansion, approved by the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission, is designed to meet the needs of one of Middle Tennessee’s fastest-growing regions. It will also create new job opportunities as construction gets underway.
What’s coming to the Sumner Station campus?
Highpoint Health first announced it filed a certificate of need application with the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission seeking approval to expand hospital services at its Sumner Station campus May 4.
The recently approved project will add a range of new services and facilities, including:
- An eight-bed inpatient pediatric unit, the only one of its kind in Sumner County
- Sixteen inpatient medical and telemetry beds
- A four-bed intensive care unit
- A cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab
- Two operating rooms and supporting surgical services
- An endoscopy suite
- Expanded pharmacy, laboratory, dietary and environmental services
These additions are expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the community for treatment and improve emergency response capabilities.
Why Sumner County healthcare services are increasing
The hospital expansion is a response to increased demand for healthcare services in Sumner County, particularly in the western part of the county where population growth has been significant.
"As this community continues to grow, we are building the infrastructure, clinical capabilities and capacity needed to meet the healthcare challenges of tomorrow," Harkleroad said. "We're excited to get this expansion underway and take the next step in expanding access to care for the patients and families who rely on us every day."
The project is also expected to create new employment opportunities and support continued growth across the Highpoint Health system.
The Sumner Station campus is located between Gallatin and Hendersonville, near new housing developments, schools and major transportation routes.
The expansion is expected to improve access for patients and emergency medical services, reduce the need for transfers to other facilities and help ensure capacity for future growth.
