A manufacturer of canopy systems and structural steel components is leaving one Union County town and moving to Monroe as part of a $40-million expansion.
McGee Corporation, a family-owned business, plans to invest the money in building a 350,000 square foot facility and adding 32 jobs. The new space will include a steel fabrication building, a truck maintenance and wash facility and offices, according to a recent statement from the city of Monroe.
The Monroe City Council passed an economic development agreement on June 14, granting up to $748,000 in incentives for the company.
Beginning in fiscal year 2028, McGee can receive five annual payments from the city based on performance. The grant requires the corporation to invest a minimum of $30 million in the project.
“This is a company with deep roots in Monroe and Union County, and this project brings real investment, new jobs and long-term tax base growth back to Monroe,” said Teresa Campo, director of the Monroe Office of Economic Development, in the statement.
McGee Corporation was founded in Monroe in 1961 and moved to Stallings in 1986.
At the June 14 city council meeting, Campo said the $40 million investment intends to fund the purchase of the land, machinery, equipment and building construction.
A separate $696,000 five-year incentive plan was approved by the Union County Board of Commissioners in October.
“It’s a family culture, and we’re looking to bring it back to Monroe,” said Swede McGee, the president of manufacturing for the company, at the city council meeting.

McGee Corporation serves a range of customers including grocery stores, convenience stores and car washes, along with Buc-ee’s and Marriott Courtyard.
The company will retain its 164 employees who work in Stallings and add the new roles during the first two to three years of the grant period. The average annual pay for the McGee Corporation workforce is estimated to be $62,000, the city statement said.
