Gender roles tend to place a heavy burden on men and women. But for women from a conservative background, these gender roles could determine their future. Comedy and beauty influencer Nuv Kaur (@nuvpreetkaur) opened up about her experience as a “child bride” and how she managed to break free because of her TikTok fame.

“At the age of twelve, wedding preparations were being made,” Kaur said. She recalled how her parents told her that she needed to be “the best” so that she would get picked by her prospective husband.

“Around the age of, like, sixteen was when my parents started talking to my soon-to-be fiancé, who I kind of grew up with,” she added. Kaur didn’t disclose the age of her fiancé at the time of the events. But because she knew the man, she was “okay” with the arrangement.

Kaur also stated that at the time, she didn’t feel “weird” about the situation. She was raised to think that it was normal to get married at a young age, and Kaur didn’t resist the tradition. Then she got a phone and access to the internet—things started to shift from here.

TikTok changed the course of her life

Kaur uploaded a TikTok video that went viral at the time. She noticed how strangers would protectively comment on her post, reminding others that Kaur was just seventeen at the time, with many calling out anyone leaving inappropriate messages on her videos.

“I mean, you’re not wrong?” Kaur reacted. It seemed to mark a turning point in how she viewed her own situation. Nevertheless, Kaur said that her parents were furious when they found out she was posting online. Hurt by their reaction, she went on to vent to her soon-to-be fiancé.

But Kaur said that he didn’t take her side. Instead, he agreed with her parents and told her to follow them because she had to make them happy.

“I really don’t know if I can get married right now,” Kaur said. This seemed to be her realization at the time. “Something ain’t sitting right with my spirit!” she added.

Now, she’s free

“I don’t think I’m going to community college and go do medical field stuff with him. I think I want to move two hours away and go to a big university,” Kaur told her parents. They did end up fighting over the subject, and Kaur stated in another video that she got “disowned” over the disagreement. Not only did she refuse their chosen career for her, but she had also refused to be engaged at seventeen.

“Luckily, I got a bunch of scholarships because of my story, and I was posting on TikTok, so you guys also helped. Thanks, you sent a girl to college,” she told her followers. With a sizeable following, content creators can get their videos monetized, secure brand deals, and earn a living.

After finishing college, Kaur said that she tried moving back in with her parents. They forbade her from going to a concert in Malta and warned her that they were “done” with her if she went.

“We kind of just agree to disagree,” Kaur said, having come home from Malta. She has officially moved out and is living as a free woman.
