The Kansas City Royals’ disappointing 2026 MLB season has taken another devastating turn. On Wednesday morning, the Royals announced that superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. will be placed on the injured list after exiting Monday night’s game with a back injury.
While the team has not yet provided a timetable for his return, the decision to place him on the IL indicates the injury is significant enough to sideline one of baseball’s brightest young stars. For a team already buried in the standings, losing Witt is the last thing Kansas City needed.

Another Injury for the Royals’ Franchise Player
Witt has been one of the few bright spots for the Royals over the past couple of seasons, making this latest injury particularly concerning.
The 26-year-old has already dealt with health issues in 2026. Back in June, he missed six games after suffering a Grade 1 MCL sprain in his right knee. Fortunately, that injury wasn’t severe enough to require a stint on the injured list, and he was able to return relatively quickly.
This time, however, the situation appears more serious. Back injuries can be unpredictable, especially for players whose game relies on athleticism, speed, and explosive movements like Witt’s.
A Season That Keeps Getting Worse
Expectations were already low for Kansas City after struggling through much of the season, but things have continued to spiral.
The Royals own one of the worst records in Major League Baseball, and with the trade deadline approaching, the organization’s focus has increasingly shifted toward the future rather than making a late playoff push. Now they’ll be forced to navigate the coming weeks without the centerpiece of their franchise.
Replacing a player of Witt’s caliber simply isn’t possible. His production at the plate, defensive ability, and leadership make him one of the most valuable players on the roster, and his absence creates an even bigger challenge for an offense that has struggled to find consistency.
