NEED TO KNOW

  • Jon Bernthal revealed his wife’s reaction to his makeover for The Odyssey during an appearance on Today
  • The actor shaved his head and grew out a beard for the Christopher Nolan film, which hits theaters July 17
  • The Odyssey also stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya

Jon Bernthal‘s journey to The Odyssey required a dramatic makeover that unfortunately didn’t get a five-star rating at home.

In Christopher Nolan’s big-screen adaptation of the Greek epic, Bernthal, 49, portrays Menelaus, a role he committed to by shaving his head and growing out an unruly beard. The look, according to the actor, was great for the job, but not for receiving compliments from his wife of 15 years.

During his appearance on Today, Bernthal was asked if everyone in his household was a fan of his transformation, which is when he revealed that the Odyssey director Christopher Nolan’s direction got him in a “double whammy” with his wife, Erin Angle.

“[She was] not a fan of the beard at all,” Bernthal said, adding that he had facial hair for quite some time since he grew it out for another movie. “That was a big beard too. No bueno in my home.”

Still, it’s all love between Bernthal and Angle, who have been married since 2010.

In a June 9 interview with Esquire, the Walking Dead alum said that the key to a long-lasting relationship is always supporting one another.

“My marriage with her, it’s very aspirational,” Bernthal said. “Like, I’m still begging her to go out with me, begging her to hang out with me.”

“She’s the one,” he continued. “I mean, I know what it’s like to not have her. I know what I am without her, and it just doesn’t work,” he said. “I think it’s easy to start going down a road of, like, ‘I need this,’ or ‘I need that.’ And, honestly, I do think about, like, masculinity a lot, and I know there’s such a plight right now for boys. I know it’s really hard being a boy, a young man right now. I know it’s very hard.”

He continued, “But I think part of it — and maybe I’ll get in trouble for this — is sometimes you gotta shut the f--- up, man. Like, turn that s--- off and be there for the people you love. Like, that’s a real part of it.”

The longtime couple shares three children: Henry, 15, Billy, 13, and Adeline, 11.
