South County has a new resident with brown fur and a knack for climbing fences, according to the multiple residents who have called in about a bear sighting in recent days.
Arroyo Grande resident Pam Clare is one that caught the bear on footage thanks to a Ring camera which captured the small bear walking around their residence near Easy Street on July 17.
The videos show the bear moseying around the back and side of the house and climbing a small fence.
On Monday night, the Pismo Beach Police Department said it had received multiple calls about the bear in the area of James Way, but police were hoping it would find its way out of the area on its own.
“At this time, Fish and Wildlife is aware of the bear and will not be responding,” the Police Department posted on Facebook. “Please only call 911 if the bear is actively creating a dangerous situation.”
Other videos posted to social media in recent days also appeared to show the little brown bear as it was wandering through Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach.
This isn’t the first prominent bear sighting in South County this summer after another young bear was spotted multiple times in the Arroyo Grande area in June.
That sighting, however, Fish and Wildlife did decide to remove the bear and relocate it to a better, remote habitat - though it had difficulty catching it.
For safety regarding the current meandering bear, police urged residents to keep windows and doors secured and keep pets indoors.
If the bear is at all spotted, police advised avoiding approaching or attempting to feed it, and to give the bear plenty of space to allow it to leave the area on its own, the post said.
