Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Wednesday that lax controls during the administration of President Joe Biden allowed "two percent" of the people involved in medical care to ruin it for "everybody else."
Sessions said on "National Report" that audits of the Biden administration uncovered trillions in fraudulent spending including a large amount for covered medical expenses, like skin substitutes.
"The issue is the reimbursement level," he said. "There are people who were treated and the provider charged the government millions of dollars for one patient at a time. That is because the guardrails that should have been in place during the Biden administration were not. And it caused this dramatic spike."
Sessions said Americans got fleeced for hundreds of millions.
"I can't say the percent, but a huge percent of the people who do provide this service do so properly," he said. "And they were not the culprits. The culprits were people who would charge a thousand times the amount of money that was typical for these types of changes and services that were rendered."
Sessions said the Trump administration is just now getting a good look at the waste.
"So it was the very typical thing," he said. "Two percent of people ruined it for everybody else."
"As chairman of government operations, we have looked at the overspending during the Biden administration of some $2 trillion," Sessions told Newsmax. "The government accounting office, GAO, said it was $500 billion a year, literally for four years. During that period of time, we found out that what happened is the Biden administration did not have government employees at work."
Sessions said that meant no one was available to run oversight on reimbursement and funding requests.
"So that's exactly what happened," he said. "Now we're attempting to look at what that fix might be. And the Trump administration looked at the numbers and said, OK, we've got a problem.'"
A Sessions-authored bill passed the House in June to begin to put more focus on government accountability.
Sessions wrote on X: "We need real solutions to ensure that taxpayer dollars are protected and reach the citizens who need them most. The Fraud Prevention and Accountability Act is the first salvo of Congress's defense against fraudsters who seek to steal the federal benefits of the most vulnerable of American citizens."
