Support among President Donald Trump's core MAGA base for the U.S. war in Iran has fallen sharply over the past two months, according to a new poll.
A new POLITICO/Public First poll, released Wednesday, found that 37% of self-identified MAGA Trump voters now believe the war is worth its economic costs, down 13 percentage points from 50% in May.
At the same time, 37% said the United States should continue its involvement only if it does not drive up costs, an increase from 29% in the earlier survey.
Nearly one in five MAGA voters, or about 19%, said the United States should end its involvement in the conflict regardless of the economic impact.
The poll, conducted by independent polling firm Public First as part of a monthly project with POLITICO, comes as the U.S. military continues operations against Iran following renewed fighting after a ceasefire agreement collapsed earlier this month.
Trump indicated this week that he is not seeking immediate negotiations with Tehran.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, he said Iranian officials "want to desperately meet," but added, "until they are ready to meet in a meaningful way we have no interest in even talking."
White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales defended the administration's approach, saying national security decisions are not driven by polling.
"What matters most to the American people is having a Commander in Chief who takes bold action to keep them safe, which is exactly what President Trump is doing," Wales said. "The President does not make national security decisions based on fluid opinion polls, but on the best interests of the American people."
The survey found even less support for the war among Trump voters who do not identify as part of the MAGA movement.
Just 21% said the conflict is worth higher costs, while 28% said the United States should end its involvement regardless of the economic consequences.
The poll also found that voters across Trump's coalition largely attributed higher gasoline prices to the conflict with Iran.
Fifty-seven percent of MAGA voters and 63% of non-MAGA Trump voters blamed the war for rising fuel costs.
Among all Trump voters, opinions were divided on whether gas prices would have been different under a Democrat president.
Thirty-four percent said prices would have risen more under a Democrat, while 35% said they would have increased by about the same amount. Twenty percent said prices have risen more under Trump.
The poll comes as the administration faces continued military operations overseas while preparing for the 2026 midterm elections, when economic issues are expected to remain a major concern for voters.
Trump dismissed suggestions that political considerations would influence his handling of the conflict.
"They won't have any impact on me. I'm just here to do the right thing," Trump said Tuesday. "I can't think about that having to do with this."
