The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., multiple media outlets reported Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Two sources didn’t disclose the focus of the DOJ investigation to MS NOW, but a third source told the network that at least one person was contacted by the FBI last year about Mills’ finances, alleged misconduct, and individuals in his orbit. Sources told ABC News the investigation is in part about Mills’ finances.
A source familiar with the matter confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the DOJ is investigating Mills.
The DOJ and FBI declined to comment when contacted by MS NOW. When the network contacted Mills on Tuesday to comment on the ongoing investigation, Mills responded via text, "I know nothing about it."
In a brief phone call, he reiterated that he didn’t know anything about an investigation, saying, "This is the first I’m hearing about it," but he maintained that it shouldn’t have anything to do with any potential campaign finance violations because he said the Federal Election Commission had dropped an investigation into him on those grounds.
"The FEC dismissed all the campaign stuff," Mills said, suggesting the investigation must be about "all the things stemming from the Ethics investigation."
The House Ethics Committee in November 2025 opened an investigation into Mills after a referral from the Office of Congressional Conduct.
The probe covers allegations involving campaign finance, financial disclosures, government contracts, and his personal conduct, including a February 2025 domestic incident and a subsequent court-issued injunction involving a former girlfriend.
Mills was first elected to represent Florida’s 7th Congressional District in 2022 and is running for re-election in November, with his primary race scheduled for Aug. 18.
Mills has denied any wrongdoing.
It’s unclear how far along the Ethics Committee investigation is.
But in May, Committee Chairman Michael Guest, R-Miss., and ranking member Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Calif., released an update, disclosing the panel had authorized nearly 20 subpoenas, gathered thousands of documents, and had reached out to dozens of witnesses.
Mills also has faced bipartisan calls to resign or be expelled from the House.
He has refused to step down, denying he did anything wrong.
House GOP leaders have declined to expel Mills, citing the ongoing Ethics Committee investigation.
In April, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution to expel Mills from the House, alleging that "the evidence against Mills is overwhelming: beating women and telling them to lie about it, cyberstalking women, lying about his military service, and profiting off his seat."
But the measure never reached the floor for a vote.
In November, Mace forced a floor vote by introducing a privileged resolution to censure Mills and strip him of his committee assignments. However, lawmakers voted 310-103 to send Mace’s complaint to the Ethics Committee.
